RIP Doc Watson

one of the biggest influences on my guitar playing passed yesterday.

I was out playing music when I heard the news. There was one slot open
in the open mic I was at so I borrowed a guitar, all I had with me was a dobro,
and got up as the night's final performer and did Beaumont Rag, BIlly in the Lowground
and Salt Creek in tribute to Doc. He will be missed.

I loved listening to Doc Watson...its sad to hear that he'd died. In a seemingly crowded field, he was one of the best blind musicians ever, and one of the best bluegrass players of all time.

I'm not really sure that I would actually call what he played bluegrass. Doc mostly
played solo or in very small ensembles and mostly without the instruments that
one would normally associate with bluegrass ie banjo, fiddle, dobro, mandolin.
That said, many bg players covered songs he did and vice versa.

I'd call it more old timey and/americana.

So glad I did get to see him play a couple times, once even I bought my parents,
both now RIP, to see him at the Barns. Great show.

He will be missed. I heard him first at the Chicago Folk Festival some time in the early sixties. Great then, great always.

One of my favorite songs, maybe one of yours too? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5c1k949 ... re=related

Tennessee Stud was definitely a favorite for many by Doc, especially popularized
by being on the landmark Will the Circle be Unbroken 3 record set.
