Does Okafor have a player option for his next year's salary of $14-mill?

If so, is there any way he opts out so he can sign a 4 year $40-mill deal ($10 mill/year) before he gets too much older?

Opting out this summer, there will be a lot of cash floating around. He also will be 31 before the season starts. He is having a fairly good season, and might want to cash in for one last big long term deal....

Yes he has a player option. Yes, he could opt out and sign a long term deal. No, I don't think he will opt out.

Yes he can opt out but nobody seems to think it is likely. He is a very limited player offensively which hurts his value. He cant shoot jumpers or foul shots.

I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that Emeka opts out. He's been playing strong lately. There's very little competition on the FA market this off-season and there will be a bunch of teams with open space. Heck, Gerald Wallace got 4/40. Emeka could get that this off-season. I think this will be the last off-season where a few GM's are still completely clueless. Starting in 2014 when the lux tax implications ramp up I think we'll see more restraint.

Agreed at this point I'd be surprised if he doesn't opt out....he's been extremely solid the past few months. That hasn't gone unnoticed.

No doubt he'd receive a 3-4 year deal.

1 year at 14m or 4 guaranteed years at 7-9m? If my agent felt strongly that deal was out there, I'd opt out in a heartbeat in his situation/age.

It's quite obvious, to me at least, that there is that type of demand for a player such as Okafor. He has his flaws but is a very solid pro who would help immeasurably on certain contenders.

He'll be back. Ariza may be another story. IF they both were to opt out, where would we be cap wise?

Still hard to turn down 14 million. Im sure his agent will put out feelers to see what's out there before a decision is made. If his agent gets him 3/30 from a playoff team, he could bolt.

I'll take option 2 please. No brainer for a guy 30+ years old without much career left.

Pride kicks in. He might think get 14 mm next yr and get a 2/20 the next offseason. I'd take the 3/30.....but I also have made a lot less than him to this point in my life!

What I'm saying is that he ain't gonna get an 8-10 mil per year offer at his age, he would be a decent bench big on a playoff team. Okafor takes that $14 million-dollar pay-day, then hits FA.

Unless he has a career ending injury, he'll probably get a contract after next season similar to what he would get after this season, with an additional $14 million in the bank. Maybe he's as good or better next season, and GMs have more proof that he's put ailments behind him and has a solid, mature, and sustainable game worth three years at even higher salary than he'd get after this year. I'm not banking at all on him opting out.

You make it sound like he's 36. Okafor turned 30 just 6 months ago. If a 3-year $30M contract is out there for him right now, you can be pretty sure that a 2-year, $20M contract will be out there for him in 2014. It's not like he's going to massively regress at age 30.

With that the case, it makes much more sense to finish out his existing contract at $14.5M next year. Over 3 years, it's the difference between $34.5M and $30M.

Okafor does not have a player option for next year. He's under contract.

Ariza does have a player option, however. And I wouldn't be surprised to see him turn it down (or to take it for that matter).
