Bradley Beal out for the remainder of the season

Post#1 » by Spence » Wed Apr 3, 2013 8:31 pm

The Washington Wizards announced today that guard Bradley Beal will miss the remainder of the season with a stress injury in his right fibula. He is expected to resume basketball-related activities in approximately six weeks.

Beal, who was selected with the third overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, has averaged 13.9 points, 3.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds while shooting .386 from three-point range in 56 games (46 starts) this season and currently ranks third among all rookies in scoring and three-point percentage and second in minutes per game (31.2 mpg). He was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for December and January and set the Wizards rookie franchise record for three-pointers made in a season with 91.

Beal previously missed a total of 18 games on the season (11 due to a sprained left ankle, five due to a sprained right wrist and two due to a sore back).

Well, at least this will help our lame tanking efforts, but wow. I really hope this was a case of Beal coming back too early and not indicative of a long term concern.

Good. Shut down him and Nene for the rest of the year.

Excellent second half of the rookie season and reason to be really optimistic going forward. Think that hard fall he took on the Hinrich foul yesterday probably caused this?

Fibula? That's the big bone in your leg correct? Seriously hope this is precautionary move to secure the tank.. Team has a problem diagnosing these injuries until it's too late.. Wall's "stress" injury and now Bradley.. SMH..

That doesn't sound good. At least we know why he was so off last game.

I admit that I find this news extremely depressing.

No, its the smaller bone in the lower leg. The tibula is the larger one. I broke my fibula playing basketball 10 years ago. Although that kept me out for about 8 months, a stress injury to the fibula doesn't seem particularly concerning. Most players take a break after the season anyway. He should be ready to resume playing and working out by June. I don't think its that big of a deal.

Him coming back so soon from the second ankle sprain seemed kind of odd. Not surprising this happened. Should be fine next season though...

At least it's his right fibula. If it was the left, I would suspect that it was related to the ankle injury and possibly a result of misdiagnosis.

This might actually be another example of the Wizards' medical staff getting it right. They caught Wall's stress-related injury before it became a chronic problem and forced him to rest it. Maybe they're doing the same thing again with Beal. Perhaps they're starting to actually be cautious with the health of their players.

According to my source on the Wizards, both ankles of Beal have hurting him this season, not just one.

2 - Back
5 - Sprained right wrist
8 - Leg stress injury
11 - Ankle

That my friends is cause for concern. Two words come to mind and they aren't injury prone. They are Larry Hughes.

Hearing Brad Beal shut down is mostly precautionary but right leg injury came as result of overcompensation from left ankle #wizards

I thought they were waiting until he actually broke his ankle before sitting him for the remainder of the season.

This is going to ruin Ted and Randy's dream of getting that 9th seed.

Good to hear the medical staff caught it early.

Clearly he is an injury prone bust though.

I don't buy that. Beal is still a kid. I think there is a big difference between 19 and 21.

I remember when i was a teenager i would get sore ankles just playing once or twice a week. But from age 21 on i never had sore ankles in 15+ years of playing pickup games, sometimes after long layoffs.
