Pistons Unlikely To Sign Greg Monroe To Extension
Oct 17, 2013 11:48 AM EDT

Greg Monroe is unlikely to agree to a contract extension with the Detroit Pistons this month, setting up restricted free agency in the summer.
NBA teams can only have one five-year designated player, which the Pistons will likely keep for Andre Drummond before the 15-16 season.
The Pistons will have the ability to match any offer Monroe receives in free agency.

He'd be a great fit. Would it be wise to try to get him at the deadline with say a 2015 first and an expiring?

Since he's a RFA I have a feeling Detriot would want more. Since Beal is off the table, I think this trade would have to be centered around Porter.

He's good but not good enough for me to give up actual value for when it's VERY unlikely Detroit would match a max offer imo.

I'd give up Porter for Monroe in a NY minute. Then again, I'm pretty low on Porter relative to the rest of the board. If not that I'd extend a max offer to Monroe at 12:01 the night of free agency.

Fair enough, but unless our season is a total trainwreck, Washington would likely be the most attractive destination for him AND Detroit is unlikely to match - the Josh Smith signing was the writing on the wall.

If Detroit knows it can't match, they would probably look to trade Monroe this season.

I'd see trading Porter as a last resort.

If the Wizards have cap space next summer, wouldn't they be able to frontload his deal making it harder for Detroit to match? I don't see them paying Smith, Monroe, and Drummond $13 to $15 mil each.

No to signing Monroe. Save the cap space for Durant and bid on Boozer when he's amnestied.

Monroe needs to show better efficiency wise this season and play some damn defense in order for us to want to trade for him. He's a guy that I don't mind paying capspace to, but I'm not sure I'd trade many assets for him.

This is interesting. I always hear this suggestion but never see any contracts that are actually structured this way.

No all the Wizards can do is offer him a 4 year max deal. From other posts about the amount of cap space they could have, it looks like they could squeeze his max salary if they turn down Vesley and Seraphin's options and renounce all the FAs. They can would be able to retain the bird's rights for renounced free agents if Detroit matches. About the only think the Wizards could do with contract structure would be adding the 4th year as a player option.

The Pistons need help in their back court, but they can keep if they decide he is worth a max deal. They might have issues in 2016-7 if Jennings earns a big extension, but they would have Josh Smith as expiring and Monroe wouldn't be too hard to move at that point.

LOL !!

Glad you're not running the team. Hope Ernie doesn't feel the same way!

Monroe is ok, not good enough to build around, certainly not worth a max salary -- what an idea!

Two years ago Monroe had a PER of 22.5. Sure he has his short-comings and had a bit of a down year last year while doing too much on a crappy Pistons team, but what is his true value? 4 years @ 10 mill per? I'd say it's at least that. The max for him would be 4 years 55Mish. That's not a gross overpay especially when competent bigs come at such a premium. With Wall and Beal, Monroe is certainly good enough, if not a perfect complement, to build around. I'm struggling to think of 10-15 better bigs to build around than Monroe for a team with Wall and Beal, and none of those are even remotely obtainable.

His production then did warrant some considerable trade value. But he's gone down by a significant margin and wasn't conducive to much team success last season. If he really was an all star caliber big man, you think DET would have never brought Josh Smith in.

I'd rather see if a guy like Horford could be acquired with Porter+Pic(s)+expiring at some point this season.
