The Official Do we extend Gortat thread

I posting a new thread aside from the trade reaction thread. Keep in mind, that we'd want all our contracts to expire alongside Nene (which the Webster deal does as its last year is a team option).

Milsapp got 2 years, 19 million
Bogut just got extended 3 years, 36 (which could vault up to 42 based off of incentives)

What should we offer Gortat? Keep in mind that any contract extension over 3 years will result in no Durant possibility.

EG is sure to extend him just to avoid embarrassment. I just hope that he extends him to a 2-year deal only. Frankly, I don't really care about the cost. From a cap perspective, it's irrelevant. As long as he costs about $8M or more per year, we are only going to have MLE money to use in free agency.

Yup, I'd offer 2 years 26 million to see if he'd bite. There are MANY teams that have cap space this upcoming season (Suns, 76ers to name a few). If we don't extend him, than he's gone. I want to keep the Durant dream alive!

Yeah I think the danger of botching the extension is worse than the actual trade. I agree 100% that a short, slightly high deal is a lot better than a 4 year one even if it is on the cheaper side.

I think that there is no chance for extension - because of rules of NBA CBA.

Veteran extensions are limited to four seasons, including the seasons remaining on the current contract.
The salary in the first year of a veteran extension may be any amount up to 107.5% of the player's previous salary. Raises in each year of a veteran extension are limited to 7.5% of the salary in the first year of the extension

Marcin earns $ 7.727 in this season, so Wizards can raise this to about 8,3 mln $ in this year and give him at most about 28,4 mln $ for the next 3 years. This is the last chance for Gortat to get good paycheck. I think that Marcin want 4 years contract worth about 11-12 mln $ per year. And there is a big difference between 29 and 44-48...

So he will be waiting for free agency... And next he will sign with team who can give him money and good passing PG (this of course can be Washington)

Nice find. GREAT job EG! You traded a mid first rounder for a freaking rental. If we resign him, say goodbye to the Durant dreams.

^^I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if EG is not aware of this.

I'm not counting on the "Durant Dream" or fantasy as I'd call it. If Gortat lives up to his good year, he's probably more valuable to us than anyone we are likely to get in FA. It is a pretty typical GM Trying to Save His Job trade assuming the protection is top 10 for 5 years as I heard. That so, it isn't Foye/Miller level of stupid unless Gortat isn't actually healthy (and if not, the Wiz's crack medical staff can surely improve on Phoenix . . . right?)

He knows; he just doesn't care. The ONLY thing he really cares about is keeping his job.

Nate and mhd hit on what I think is crucial - keep the extension (or free agency re-signing) to 2 years. The cost in those 2 years is almost irrelevant. 3 or 4 years will likely be a disaster. And with EG still here, it likely will be 3 or 4 years.

We can't give him a 2 yr $24 million (as a random example) extension because it is against the CBA. If we limit the extension to two years the best we can offer is roughly $17 million which he can surely beat by becoming a free agent this summer and signing a new contract as opposed to signing an extension during the season.

After seeing _tr's research on the matter, I think an extension of any kind is off the table. Gortat isn't going to agree to a deal that starts at $8.3M a year, whether it's for 1, 2, 3 or 4 years. He's going to want more.

We will have to wait until the summer. I figure someone will offer at least 3 years $30M or maybe 4 years $40M. I think the best case scenario is that we offer a 2-year, $26M deal and Gortat takes it rather than go for a longer deal at less money per year.

Is this the first time any of you has figured this out?

Gortat is a rental player for one season. For the privilege, we give up a good draft pick.

Can we sign him as a FA? Sure. Could we have signed him as a FA w/o trading for him? Sure.

Does having him here this year make it easier to sign him as a FA? Maybe. Who knows?

Do Ernie and Ted even *want* to re-sign him? Maybe. Who knows.

This team is run by idiots.

Hopefully he resigns...he's a good player. Definitely an upgrade over anyone we've had in ages.

No, we need every penny to make a run at Durant. That's the best shot this franchise has of getting out of this 30+ year drought. We miss out on Durant, we'll be in another 30+ year drought...

No, no, no. Too old, history of injuries, how many times before we learn from our groundhog day??

Making a run at Durant? We might as well make a run at Lebron...makes as much sense.

Pretty sure Lebron didn't grow up in the DC area.

Gortat is much better than the majority of people on this board by seem to think.

I liked him when he was a sub for Dwight Howard. Gortat was terrific his first full season with Phoenix. The Suns were still better last season, despite Gortat's injuries. with Marcin on the court than without him.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... -off/2012/
http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... -off/2013/

In three seasons with Phoenix, Gortat's PER was 18.5 and his WS/48 was .147
His career playoff ORtg (both Orlando playoffs and Phoenix playoff season) is 129.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... l_advanced

Gortat' is IMO potentially better than the best of Caron Butler or Antawn Jamison; two other Ernie Grunfeld acquisitions, who each made the All Star team as Wizards. He's going to make a huge impact if he remains healthy. Gortat is MUCH better than Seraphin. He's better than Okafor. He's going to be terrific with Nene.

YES. Resign him, unless there are injury concerns.

This player didn't make this team mediocre for the foreseeable future. Quite the opposite. Beal's going to be wide open or rarely double teamed. Wall will have a big man all the time, Nene or Gortat, who can score with great accuracy. Now there is a shot blocking C with good offense on the Wizards. (And there's also a really nice stretch four with some size in Al Harrington). Gortat's made the roster complete.

The Wizards have a chance, if they keep their defense on the wings, to win over 50 games and be the 4th seed in the east. I don't see Chicago being better than the Wizards per se, if Wall manages the team and his ego, and if Beal improves as much as I think he will. The team and Wittman better recognize Gortat as better than they have.

Only Randy Wittman can mess up by not starting Gortat.

The Wizards already showed ignorance when they waived Shannon Brown and Kendall Marshall. Either of them would have been solid additions. So, although I think Gortat's very good and should be re-upped, I'm not sure the Wizards won't mess up and try to be cheap (having already decided against re-upping Gortat, or by benching him and making sure he bolts as a FA); or that the Wizards management has eyes on something other than winning.

Why wouldn't you resign potentially the best C the Wizards have had in 25-30 years (the length of this playoff drought)

CCJ, why do you think there's a good chance Wittman's not going to start Gortat?

Shannon Brown and Kendall Marshall are end of the bench caliber players that you can get any time. You can maybe make a case that Brown can be a little better than that, but he's not a good player. The only reasons they were included in the trade were - Phoenix (a rebuilding team) had no interest in them, and their contracts made the trade work. If anyone picks up either, they'll likely get paid the minimum - because no team thinks much of them. It wasn't ignorant to cut them - considering we were over the 15 player limit.

If they do re-up Gortat, it'll likely be for more than 2 years - which would effectively end the chance of the Wizards having significant cap room in the Wall/Beal era.
