It is better than that for the Lakers financially. They only pay Okafor about 1.5 million for the rest of the season. To make the deal even better for the Lakers finding another team to take Okafor and give back cheaper contracts will get them under the luxury tax. If they can get the returning salary under 11.7 million, they will be under the luxury tax.

If there is pick consideration, it probably is modifying the pick the Lakers owe the Suns.

Now, Phoenix could end up getting a HOF PF/C for what the Wizards traded for Gortat -- AND THEY HAVE MARSHALL, already.

Held to account after 3+ years on the job. The Cav's owner isn't satisfied with making money and mediocrity like Ted is. Nor is Mr. Gilbert satisfied with "sitting back and waiting to see what Grant does next" like some on this board advocate for.

It will be interesting to see if their new GM will make a lot of moves before the trade deadline. The most urgent is trying to get a long-term return for Deng. Since he is expiring, I doubt he gets much draft pick consideration in return. An Asik+filler/Deng trade could help both teams a lot.

Another option might be a do-over on the Deng deal, swapping him for Okafor and a pick.

I think the Cavs try to deal Jack and Vareajo. Vareajo is an interesting situation since he is "almost expiring" given how little of his deal is guaranteed next season. For some teams he might be more appealing than Gortat or Asik since they are either expiring or fully signed(with a trade kicker) next season. I think they try to move Waiters and maybe even Bennett, but I don't think they find suitable deals before the deadline.

More importantly, the Cavs fired their GM in midseason. They didn't wait until the end of the year to see how things "play out," because they evaluated their GM's entire body of work -- not just the impact on the latter half of a particular season.

Last night they lost to a Lakers team that only had 5 active players (and one of them fouled out, and was allowed to stay in the game on a technicality ). It was embarassing on a national level.

This Cavs team is at absolute rock bottom. Their owner gave a playoff mandate in the offseason. So they signed Brown for 5 years, traded for Jack in the offseason, traded for Deng midseason, and still ended up being one of the worst teams in the league. On top of that, they've been fully healthy, not like injuries can be used as an excuse.

They're a national embarassment, during the Knicks-Cavs game on TNT the team and players were getting absolutely ripped by the talking heads.

Brown also benched Irving for that loss. Cleveland is all sorts of messed up now. They should just exercise the nuclear option, move the team to Seattle and call it a day.

Nivek, thanks for your consideration. They really should pay both of us. We are pretty good at what they are not the best at.

I will be in Cleveland before you can say Aloha, at the right price. Nivek, the best part is I am very comfortable staying in my lane. Scouting the draft and exploring free agents is my favorite thing. What's not working with personnel on hand and who to trade is about as deep as I want to get. I also would love to be an educational consultant and mentor to any player or family member. Faith based stuff I am open discussing. Encourage young guys and even be a bridge between coach and players, because confidence and trust are important.

Tonight, might take my son to see Hawaii play UC Santa Barbara. Alan Williams looks like Hot Plate Williams on TV. However, his PER is 38. I want to see him face a good UH front line.

As the saying goes, ultimately success or failure starts at the top, and that's Gilbert as much as Grant. I'm AMAZED that they couldn't put together a future championship contender. They had things set up real well - a young supastar guard, some nice young talent to go with him, the first pick in the draft, and plenty o cap room going forward. Then the owner makes a comment about refusing to be in the lotto again, so they have a self-created mandate to make the playoffs. So, they pick Bennett with the hope of filling their SF hole (even though he can't play SF) rather than taking their time developing Noel. And then they still try to avoid lottoland by acquiring Luol Deng. Now they've poisoned what could have been a great situation in a year or 2, and nobody wants to be there.

5yrs/$20mil.. it's been overlooked but that's one of the worst moves they made in all of this.

And if I'm not mistaken, they're STILL paying him from his first stint with the team

I never bought into the hype. I had them missing the playoffs this year and finishing 11th.

Its hard to predict these things because you never know who get traded during the season.
