Interesting article on pick and roll play in the NBA:

http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2014/02/2 ... -the-suns/

Heading into Thursday’s game, Wall and Gortat had run almost 200 more pick-and-rolls than any other combination in the league. They’ve been a pretty solid combination, with the Wizards scoring 1.06 points per possession when the pair ran a pick-and-roll. That mark is a notch better than the league average of 1.03 (on pick-and-roll possessions) and ranks 87th among 209 pairs of teammates who have run pick-and-rolls on at least 100 possessions.

The article also points out how much worse the p&r is when ran with Nene instead of Gortat, and that Nene was one of the main causes of the Wizards offensive inefficiencies. Interesting

Not that impressive. Essentially, they run the P&R a lot but with average efficiency.

Umm considering that John Wall had no idea whatsoever how to run p&r early in his career, how is this not impressive?

Remember all the complaints last year (and early this season) about how Wall had no idea how to run the p&r, and his half court game had no subtlety to it? Now, not only is our point guard running p&r, but he is doing it more than any other PG in the league. That's how you develop the instincts for it, by doing it over and over. Wall is going to be a great p&r player soon. I remember someone complaining that they'd never seen Wall make a pocket pass on the pick and roll. Now he makes that bounce pass like 10+ times a game

Their pick and roll efficiency isn't average because Wall and Gortat are poor p&r players, it's average because our offense has no spacing and no creativity. That's obvious to anyone watching the games.

But at least we know that if the right system and players were put in place, Wall can be an elite pg based on his pick and roll ability. And as his pullup jumper gets better, that p&r attack will be even more deadly.

Our franchise point guard is taking leaps forward, I see that as a positive.

Not only did he not know how to do PnR, he didn't know how to use a pick..

Which lead to the famous line... neither does EG.

No. Its been posted about a lot. Gortat has contributed a boat load to Walls development in that area. And even Long 2 Beal has learned to do it some.

So in typical EG fashion. He does some of good moves. Then he goes all nuclear brain fart spending two years looking for a back up PG and signing Maynor for 2M.

EG. The Bi-Polar GM

He GMs like a drunk walks a straight line.

That's a great metaphor, hands11.

Efficiency will go up if the floor stays nice and spaced out. It should also probably go up the more they do it and learn each other. The skill is there for both of them

I'm impressed with the way Gortat catches the ball. He's got good hands and he's also got a nice finishing touch. I think PnR finishing is his single biggest skill.

We need to keep Gortat.
