Top Five Reasons Why the Name "Wizards" Sucks

Post#1 » by Zonkerbl » Mon Apr 7, 2014 3:53 pm

Here's mine:
1) What in the world kind of idiotic sports name is the "Wizards"?

2) Are we marketing directly to toddlers?

3) HARRY POTTER IS NOT WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR

4) Wizards are old, slow, and succeed mainly by avoiding direct confrontation with stronger enemies. UM, WHAT??????

5) MY FRIENDS MOCK ME

Ok, GO!!!!!!!

5. Wizards have nothing to do with the city of DC
4. Super soft name. Not intimidating at all.
3. The logo looks ridiculous.
2. It can be embarrassing to be a fan of a team with such a stupid name.
1. The bullets is a far better name and a legitimate option that is just sitting there for the taking.

How about

"was chosen solely because Washington Wizards is an alliteration"

I guess second place was the "Washington Window Washers"

It's Dungeons and Dragonsy. Better than Dwarves or Elves though. I feel like we've half-assed it. There are so many Wizard themes and characters out there, we could have at least gotten a Gandalf or Merlin mascot.

I don't think Bullets is the solution though. That would spit on Abe's grave and I think the franchise should respect his decision to go away from Bullets.

Yeah, I'm all for respecting Abe's wishes and staying away from the Bullets. But there are so many other great options:
Senators.
Grays!
Generals!!!

Or if you're going to pander to the toddler set, why not follow the Toronto Raptors and pick a cool but essentially harmless popular meme? THE HONEY BADGERS!!!

Or we could talk another franchise into changing their name to the pirates, so we can be the ninjas!

Or we could follow New Orleans and name the team after the state bird! THE FIGHTING WOOD THRUSHES!!!

Waaaaaah.

If you associate sorcerers and the like with Wizards, the problem may be with your inner nerd fighting his way out.

The name Wizard has pretty strong basketball (and DC area) connotations.

My nephew just played Merlin in his high school play - Camelot, so I'm thinking maybe the name isn't so terrible, afterall.

I'm sorry, when I walk into a party with my "Wizards" jersey on and my hipster non-sports understanding friends mock me about it, launching into a windy "Wizard of Westwood" explanation (isn't that a soap opera anyway?) is not going to help.

And yes, I value my hipster friends more than I value my local sports teams so don't even both going there.

Don't show up to a hipster party in a Wizards jersey unless you also wear really tight short shorts, for that Richard Simmons look.

PS: WizD had a really good explanation for what was wrong with the name. Maybe he'll chime in.

Why do we have to respect Abe's stance? He's not the owner anymore and I dont think the name correlates at all to street violence. I respect his stance on it and may even applaud it but that doesnt mean that I have to abide by it. If Ted changes the name back, Im not going to go get a gun and kill everyone on this site, atleast not any moreso then I would if I saw a action movie.

We can respect people and still disagree. We can side with people's overall views but still disagree on one specific subject. I admire his position and everything he's done but it doesnt mean that I agree with his decision on this or feel that it had to stay abolished forever

GhostsOfGil hit one of my main reasons with his #4 "Super soft name. Not intimidating at all." I understand that someone could be a wizard with the basketball or a coaching wiz. The name still sucks. Not being able to pick a good name is yet another example of organizational futility.

However, the "Lakers" makes no sense in that LA is more of a desert (got their name from being the Minnesota Lakers before.) Yet they are a storied franchise that it known for playing good basketball. The name "Lakers" is synonymous with winning. Lakers is iconic.

If the Washington had become a winning, respectable basketball team for the majority of the time after they changed the from the Bullets, the name Wizards wouldn't be so bad. As it stands, it became yet another kick to the balls for already beaten down fans.

I prefer Bullets, but understand it could be a little difficult to change it back. I was a fan of Washington Monuments back when they changed the name to Wizards.

Top reason the Wizards moniker sucks?

It's not the Bullets.

Beyond that, I don't really care all that much. I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be the sea dogs.

Washington Wizards. Has a ring to it.

2) Are we marketing directly to toddlers?

Wizards are popular from Lord of the Rings/ Dungeons and Dragons which appeal to adults more than kids. So no idea where you got that from.

3) HARRY POTTER IS NOT WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR

He is not the only Wizard. again, Dungeons and Dragons, Magic, Lord of the Rings, etc.

4) Wizards are old, slow, and succeed mainly by avoiding direct confrontation with stronger enemies. UM, WHAT??????

not true. Again look at Dungeons and Dragons, Warcraft, etc

5) MY FRIENDS MOCK ME

awwwwwww

I go to parties wearing a kilt usually. I can't wear a sports jersey because I'd be mocked.

So we're named after Walt Williams?

Sorry, Fish, but those references are WAY dated, and the team name is unquestionably lame. It would be one thing if we had a history of winning, but instead our history matches our name: lame (that rhyme was for free btw).
