Miami might be coming after Gortat. Spencer Hawes is the best available big man or one of the best? Oy. We are going to have to overpay him.

Would it be the worst thing in the world to let Gortat walk and sign Spencer Hawes? He'd be half the cost, is a near double-double per-36 minutes, spreads the floor exceptionally well and would be a great fit with John Wall. He posted a PER of over 16 with the Cavs last season and is a pretty good passing big man to boot.

I'm not saying he's better than Gortat - he's not. But he's a better fit and if Marcin is commanding 13mil per year, I think I may rather sign Hawes for a MLE-sized deal.

We'd be hurting defensively probably but I imagine the floor spacing would make for a much improved offense. Hawes is only 26 as well I think. I wonder how hard CLE will try to retain him?

Our defense would suffer...badly.

I really can't believe people are comparing the two. Forget the numbers. Hawes can't defend me and he's allergic to the paint. Offensively he's probably a tad better than Marc. I don't want him as my starting five. Rather as a backup 4-5. Plus the intangibles that Gortat brings. They have nothing to do with metrics.

Miami can't afford Gortat. The only way he goes there is if he chooses to be underpaid so he can win (and I don't think Marcin is that type of person). They can maybe afford Ariza on a discount, but not MG.

People are acting like the Big Three are all going to take $10M/yr Spurs deals. LBJ will obviously get the supermax, Bosh and Wade will still take around $15M/yr.

Hawes can't defend an ant on the floor. He is brutal defensively.

This.

People are overstating the threat from Miami. Lebron wants a max contract. That's about $22M. Cole and Anderson are already under contract for a total of roughly $3M. Wade and Bosh were due to get $40M a piece over the next 2 years. They'll take a pay cut, but you can be damn well sure that they're going to end up with more guaranteed money in the long run not less. You can expect no less than 4 years $50M for Wade, and 4-years $60M for Bosh. That's $11M for Wade this year and $14M for Bosh this year. So now we're up to $50M for a team of 5 guys. Minimum salary cap holds will get that cap number up to $53M. That leaves no more than $10M for a free agent. And that's under VERY optimistic scenarios for Bosh's and Wade's restructuring.

I think Miami will go after Lowry as their big fish, and then try to squeeze in someone like Dalembert as an extra big body.

Gortat is going to get 12M/year. Not sure he's "worth" it, but the market dictates he is.........so he will. Especially from Grunfeld.

Ariza is getting a lot of interest, and from my Dominican friends in DR/Miami it has always sounded like he didn't like DC.....at all. That being said that was a few years ago.

Porter better be taking in 200 grams of protein a day, shooting a few hundred 3s, lifting 5 times a week and at a specialty sports trainer or we're in trouble.

That seems like a huge chunk of money for Gortat to sign for. Plus there are no sale taxes in Florida.

Grunfeld will have to pay more. But if other teams were given the opportunity and had his bird rights, then they would pay more too. Personally I hope the Wizards have a walk away point from Gortat at some point but you are right in suggesting this will probably happen.

Ariza probably didn't like DC until Wall got healthy which was at the beginning of 2013

He repeated a lot his fam is comfortable out here so I think he'll give the Wiz a fair shot at keeping him.

I think a good deal for both sides could start at $12 million/year. Starting there with a max decline for 4 years ends at $9.3 million. If the last year is guarranteed at 50% that is $38 million in guarranteed money. With a rising cap, you would start to have some flexibility in the last couple years - especially if Porter doesn't end up on a large contract.

However starting at that same $12 million starting salary and 5 years of increases makes the final salary $16.5 million and a total deal of $73.5 million :(

The state tax issue is also overblown.

Let's assume that we offer $11M. The state income tax in DC is 8.5%. It is only owed for 41 games, or half the season. If Gortat played in Miami, he would not owe income tax on those 41 games, but he would owe income tax on two extra road games in Washington. So effectively, the income tax disparity covers 39 games of an 82 game season. Gortat would pay an extra 4.04% in income taxes if stayed in DC. That's $430,000 out of $11M. Also you have to factor that Florida is going to have higher sales taxes, property taxes and fees to partially offset their revenue lost by not having income taxes. In reality, that 8.5% differential in income taxes is probably more like 5% net. So that $430,000 is really more like $260,000. It's not that big of a deal. If Miami offers $10M, we can offer $10.3M and offset the tax disparity.

He also wouldn't owe taxes on the 4 games against Orlando and the 6 games played in Texas.
