BREAKING NEWS: New Verizon Center Court Design (GTFIH)

From Grantland:

Case in point: The Wiz over the last 10 years have gone through a mess of designs featuring a robed wizard traipsing across center court, an all-gold paint with a blue half-circle above the foul line, a total absence of red, two-toned everything, and other examples of ill-fated messiness.
The Wiz jump a few spots with a redesign on track for this season that dispenses with the simplistic “Wizards” scrawled across half court in favor of the classic “DC” logo, with a hand popping out of the “D” and reaching high for a basketball. That’s a piece of NBA high art, and under the most recent Wiz design, it had been relegated to a small slice of territory in the corner.
The Wiz are also erasing the college lanes, creating a clear painted area, and swapping out navy for red as the paint color. It appears to be a bright red, and it will take time to conclude how it looks as a centerpiece color. The baselines are also getting a makeover — from red with blue lettering to the inverse.
The two-toned wood, alas, remains, and the Wiz have long had a lighting system that dulls the court. But this is a good step. The stars along the near sideline add a splash of nation’s capital fun.
Wizards continue to push the boundaries. Thoughts?

Saw that article. I think it's a bit of an improvement, though sometimes it's hard for me to tell how such a large graphic design will look based on a tiny mock up.
I like the Hornets honeycomb court a lot. Wonder if it's distracting when you're on the court?

I like the lack of college lanes. It screams "Lanes? we don't need no freakin lanes"

I think the de-emphasizing the wizard logo means a name change is planned down the road. I don't think they can go back to bullets.

With a new name, maybe they'll honor some ethnic group.

Nice, but it still won't be good enough. Queue the Ted/Ernie haters:
Say a prayer for the Coyote. No longer will he be able to fire up the locals during key moments at the AT&T Center by jumping on each of the letters spelling out S-P-U-R-S at midcourt.
The go-to move is now impossible with a new court design that eschews the team name in favor of the iconic spur logo at center court. It’s absolutely gigantic at that — a whopping 25 feet long and 20 feet wide, the largest of any NBA midcourt logo according to Grantland’s Zach Lowe.
http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnatio ... r-2014-15/The Spurs have a bigger logo? Why can't we be like them?!

That article..... does this guy jock the Bulls a bit? I cant keep up with which writers are fans of which team. Bulls are way too high with the basketball behind the bull... yuck.
On another note: Hornets court looks SICK. So does the Hawks court with the old school pacman logo. Both of those courts are the only ones that really WOW'd me. Brooklyn is nice too.

That's a good court. I'd make 2 changes
- Make the inner circle wood through the whole court.
- & add the college lanes make them blue (opposite of last year)
Think the blue would make that red pop as opposed to up against the wood.
Can't wait for my boy PP34 & the young studs in Washington to run **** in the east!

I'm usually disappointed with graphic designs associated with sports franchises. Maybe it's lack of creativity among designers working for the specific market, or maybe research has shown current and potential fans just don't like change. I'll bet part of the problem is owners and/or managers nixing visionary design or imposing uncreative ideas on the designers ("draw this for me").
I kind of like that huge Spur (maybe unintentionally comical), the Hornets honeycomb design, Celtics parquet, Warriors use of color (much more than Lakers). Blue against red might work for Wizards, though the inverse examples (Pistons ans Sixers) don't really grab me too much. Hard to tell on a 2" x 5" image though.

It's Zach Lowe, he's as unbiased as they come
