See the second graph below:

“The Brazilian guy was working for me, that’s what was working for me. I just continued to play to my strengths. I think I was struggling during preseason and just changed … I came back to my routine from last year. And I kind of starting coming back to playing my basketball, and I just wait for the game to come to me. I’m not trying to force anything, I’m not trying to break the system.

“You guys see the great part with me and Nene working on the court. But Nene in the locker room, but me and him eye and eye, it’s a different story. It’s a challenge for me to follow this guy every time and do what he asks me to do. But end of the day, he’s a force. He’s an offensive force. He brings so much attention offensively, that people focus on him and that’s helping a lot of things for me. He was just great. The first half I was rolling and he was in the second half.”

Cause for concern? Typical co-workers not always seeing eye to eye? Somewhere in the middle?

Or perhaps it was just an awkwardly worded phrase due to English being his second language. Those guys generally have nothing but praise for each other so it seems rather surprising that there is animosity in their personal relationship.

Maybe he just means that Nene has been challenging Gortat to really step up his game and be the best that he can be, and that's hard work. I dunno.

Yeah, I wouldn't read too much into a guy's word choice when he's speaking off-the-cuff in a second language.

I thought of that, and you may be right.

It also may be Nene -- a very religious and seemingly pious fellow -- gives Gortat a hard time about his open affinity for porn (he tweets about it), etc.

If I had to guess, I'd say Gortat was using inside humor, and they get along fine. But at the end of the day, they don't need to be friends. As long as they get along on court - and they seem to - they're fine.

I think Gortat just means he's a little taller than Nene, so it's hard to see eye-to-eye. :D

More seriously: Maybe Gortat is saying he doesn't think Nene is a better player or that he has more stature in the locker room ("eye and eye" = equal?), but he's willing to play off him during games for the sake of the team and he acknowledges that it's working.

:dontknow:

Maybe they're just pushing each other to be better? They seem like good friends, and generally we don't lose when they both are on the court, I see no reason to fret over this.

Nene doesn't like playing center. He has said so publicly so i am sure he is really glad Gortat is here.

I seriously doubt he has a problem with Gortat. He is just a vocal player which is fine. You really need a player who is willing to set people straight on the court. It shouldn't be just the coaches who dish out criticism.

No wonder Nene wouldn't give me his autograph.

yeah I actually thnk the question probably was why is he playing so much better now than in the preseason or how is he living up to the contract and I think he was giving Nene praise and saying that Nene is what is working for him. That when they get together they dominante. I also think he was trying to say that he was trying to live up to the contract in the preseason and play like superman and play outside the system but now he's just going back to last year, letting the game come to him, not worrying about the contract, and is actually playing better by trying to do less.

As far as the other stuff, I think he means that Nene is challenging him to dominante and be great but he cant dominate all the time like Nene wanted. I think Nene was actually maybe boosting his head about the contract and how he could be a 25 & 12 guy or something and thats what he was trying to do but he realizes that he's not that and playing off Nene is actually what helps him moreso then trying to be a one man gang like Shaq or something.

Literally everything Ive seen from them 2 says nothing about not liking eachother. Im talking about stuff even like when its a timeout and neither are in the game, I see them playing around on the outside of the huddle and joking with eachother. I think they may even be best friends

Yeah, sounds to me like he was trying to say Nene is really pushing him in practice and he hasn't always been able to do it.

I have an autograph from Nene. He was still on his rookie deal. Maybe he's not as approachable now, but he signed for me the same day Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas refused.

What makes the guy "seemingly pious"?

FWIW Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes didn't get along well.

While Nene thinks about the next game in the Madison Square Garden, Gortat thinks a lot about the 'garden' of Madison Ivy.

I heard that not many people got along with Hayes.

I think this is a case of a guy speaking in a second language, and parts of what he said can be misconstrued. I believe he was trying to say that in the past, Nene made him better on offense because he attracts so much attention that Gortat could get easy opportunities; and this year, after the big contract, he was trying to do more on offense in the preseason than he had in the past.

In the part about "in the locker room," I think Gortat was trying to say that he's just as competitive, and just as much of a leader, as Nene (thinks he is). So it's difficult for him (Gortat) to check that feeling when they're on the court and go back to letting Nene dominate and attract all that attention so he can benefit from the easy opportunities that generates.

Basically, he should have said "We're both big, talented, competitive players. So it's difficult for me to alternate between playing the lead and playing second fiddle, depending on who's hot. But Nene gets a lot of attention on offense, so it makes sense for me to check my ego and play that second fiddle for a while. You saw it the other night. I was hot and benefiting from his play in the first half, and that made them focus on me. So then he was able to take it to 'em in the second half."

As someone who speaks a few languages -- but only one is my mother tongue -- I know these things happen all the time.

Relax. He was complimenting Nene and admitting that it's difficult to not force things and play that second fiddle role sometimes.

I'll be worried when Gortat brings two polish WWI pistols into the locker room with a note for Nene saying "choose one".

I have no idea what Gortat was trying to say. I need to see video of how he says it and the context around it to try and figure out what he meant. The statement is too broken up.

I've always thought the two of them were close anyway. I have a hard time believing anybody doesn't get along with Gortat. He would be the funnest teammate.

Watch the video of him saying it at 0:25, he was in a good mood and clearly meant it in a complimentary way:

http://www.monumentalnetwork.com/videos ... me-11-1-14

He gave credit to Nene first before even talking about himself.

Pretty stupid thread, tbh
