The Washington Wizards could be closer to a deal that would build a new state-of-the-art training facility for the team.
It would be funded by raising taxes on tickets to the games. WNEW Senior Correspondent Mark Segraves reports the new facility would cost between $30-$40 million and seat about 5,000 people.
The negotiations are in the preliminary stages but several sources tell Segraves that it would be located where Shaw Skate and Dog Park currently is in Northwest, D.C. near the Shaw/Howard Metro Station.
The Wizards play their home games in the same building where they train — at the Verizon Center.
Ted Leonsis, the team’s owner, has said that he wants to do what a lot of NBA teams are now doing, which is build a separate state-of-the-art training facility. Just a few years ago, Leonsis built a training facility for the Capitals in Arlington.
According to Segraves, the plan being presented by D.C. officials would have the District’s government borrow the money for construction which would be paid back most likely by an increased tax on tickets and concessions at Wizards games.
The land the facility would be built on is owned by the District. If the plan goes through, the facility could be use for other events like the Washington Mystics’ games and high school games.
