Apparently through physicals and such the Wizards can drag the process out to 6 days. Although they have to make the matching official soon.

Yes...now we have improved by making Otto one of our core big 3...now we just need to sign Wall and hope JW, Beal and Otto become the best 1,2 and 3 in history for us to have a chance to win a ring during the life of Ottos contract. I mean otherwise what's the point right?
I'm happy we have him but what does this mean for the teams championship aspirations?

I don't see having EG as GM and having serious championship aspirations as both being possible.

It would be funny if John Wall makes a statement to Otto: You earn the most so lead this team!

Yeah it's not like they were one game away from the ECF with a core of 26, 23,23, 21 year olds. Not like they had a plan to sign KD, or Horford, or trade for Paul George. Not like they are now paying the luxury tax or anything.
Yep, just aiming for 2nd round exits.

When a franchise has had as little success as this one, & for so long, it's easy to become intoxicated by what amounts to just a little success.
When, for example, you've yearned to "make the playoffs" for years, it's easy to forget that in the NBA more than half the teams make the playoffs.
Along the same lines it's easy to forget that more than 25% of all NBA teams are in the 2d round of the playoffs. Whereupon it's also easy to imagine that your team is somehow in the hunt for a title by getting to that 2d round. But, actually, no, it isn't.
It's even easier to forget that your GM announces repeatedly what your team's goals actually are:
"Our goal is the same every year. It's to compete to be in the playoffs."
Ernie's said those words dozens of times. & he means them. That's his goal.

I was kinda creeped out by one of the replies to the article - somebody's using my user name. That Ruzious is not me. Anyway... that 15% trade kicker... a good GM anticipates. I gotta think that Grunfeld could have avoided that if he simply made the max offer in the first place. He should have known Otto was going to get an offer like that. Hopefully, there's no reason to trade Otto in the next 4 seasons, but it's always smart to keep the options open.

Due to the weirdness of NBA max salaries, it looks like the trade kicker would only matter if it happens in his final year. Since otherwise it would cause his salary to exceed the maximum for his years of service.

We'll see if they end up actually paying the luxury tax. If they make a move before the trade deadline they can probably avoid it. But that's no badge of honor it they actually pay it for the first time ever for a team with serious deep playoff aspirations.
