What is the implication on how he is paid next year?

He gets the $2.5 mil. Whether it's stretched over 3 years or he's paid w/one check remains to be seen.

I think its less because of the number of games he played? Im pretty sure its less.

It's only $2.5M instead of $5.8M because of the number of games he played. But it's still $2.5M. The only issue now is whether or not we stretch.

No. It makes sense. They're stretching his NEXT three years so that his cap hit this summer is the smallest it can possibly be.

Man, we never saw his injury troubles coming. He was so healthy there for a while... well at least long enough for Ernie to pay him handsomely.

At least the guy is able to fund his rap career now, thank goodness for that.

I can forgive the mistake of resigning him. Remember that Ariza had never shot that well from 3-point range, and nobody could have reasonably predicted Ariza's improvement that rendered Webster totally unnecessary. I recognize that there was a gamble based on Webster's injury history, but it was a gamble I could live with. Webster was really, really good during that first year here - and he was a good locker room leader on a team that needed one.

My biggest beef is that I felt that they could have limited the length of his contract to 3 years. That guaranteed $2.5M in Year 4 was a tough pill to swallow given his injury history.

Agreed, completely understandable signing. The partial 4th year wasn't great, but IIRC he mentioned another offer so maybe they had to sweeten the pot. But overall, worth the risk IMO. All the best Martell!

Understandable my a**. The guy had repeated back issues and a 4 yr deal is understandable??? Please, stretch any harder to absolve Grunfeld and you might pull something.

He never came back to this level:

That time he was better 3-point shooter than Ariza.

You did indeed advise against resigning Webster, but the general consensus of the board was that he should be resigned. You were proven right, but I still say it was an understandable mistake since it appeared that it's the same mistake that most on our board would have made.

This isn't like the Vesely pick, or the Miller trade, or the Crittenton trade, or the Eric Maynor signing. Those were all obviously bad moves that were easily predicted and therefore unforgivable. I'm not saying EG is a good GM. But I don't put the Webster resigning in the same category. I chalk the Webster mistake to it simply being a gamble that didn't pay off. Even good GM's make mistakes sometimes. And bad GM's occasionally make understandable mistakes in addition to their collection of unforgivable mistakes.

My thing is, it seems like when Ernie finds a gem he tries to prove it to others that he found one. Webster was on the street, metaphorically speaking when Ernie picked him up. Gave him a 1 year vet minimum deal and he balled out.

Why did he offer 4 years? Because Ernie gave himself a pat on the back for finding him? Because some other team was in the running? They could have had him, he was a free agent the year prior, no one wanted him. He had a laundry list of injuries, Webster had no leverage. He had one good year, a contract year but that doesn't wash away the injury history. It's over and done with, but he did the same w/Etan and Daniels, and Songaila. I would have given Webster a 2 year deal, probably at $10 million total. Years 3 and 4 would have been team option years, basically depending on his health. Just by having the 4th year partially guaranteed told me Ernie wanted to protect himself because of the injuries, but he probably could have offered less years. Whatever, it's done.

According to the Washington Post, Webster received more money from another destination but actually accepted less money to stay with Washington. John Wall also ended up taking slightly less and perhaps he would not have been so generous if Washington did not re-sign Webster.

Dat and others were right that Webster was not out of the water with his injury issues. Ultimately, one would have to think that Webster would have been worth a lot more than this contract had he stayed healthy.

BTW, Zach Lowe tweeted yesterday that the Wizards will stretch Webster, no surprise.

Wall was offered -- and accepted -- the maximum salary he could receive.
