Blair for smith.
I'd also consider Hump for Smith, but I'm not sure the salaries match up.
If you wanted to take a big gamble we could do Nene for Smith and Lance. We would use Smith as a small ball 5 and Lance could play 1-3 and be a defensive stopper sort of like temple is now. Both guys come off the books next year (lance has a team option next year) so they wouldn't affect our free agency. With that said I'd probably hold on to Nene, he's been darn good when he isn't injured and we do lack big man depth.

We have no PFs on the roster aside from Humphries

You don't want to watch Smith trying to lead the break instead of passing to Wall who is running right beside him. Trust me as a former Atlanta resident and fan.

I agree with you in the diagnosis of the problem, but not he prescription. The last time Smith rated average or better in my analysis was the 2012-13 season. The days when he was good are well in the past.

Not to mention that another short term bandaid is *not* what this team needs -- we need some young assets that we can add to our going-forward core.

I wonder if we could get Richaun Holmes from philly with Colangelo coming into power. Although probably fruitless cause Randy won't play rookies... but we need someone developing here to develop.

I got some interest in Beal/Nene for Ibaka/Waiters. I'm not sure if I would do it, but I think it would at least give us a shot at improving the interior play.

That would be a fantastic trade.
Ibaka is the perfect type of modern big man. He can start at PF and give the team a conventional look early in games, and then shift to center in crunch time when a 5-out floor-stretching configuration is ideal.
If we signed Durant, we'd still have about $10M left to go after a replacement SG. Fournier would be great, but probably not available at that price. Eric Gordon might be a nice alternative:
PG Wall/Sato
SG Gordon/Oubre
SF Durant/Porter
PF Ibaka/Durant
C Gortat/Ibaka

For that very reason, the Thunder wouldn't do it. I don't think they have any interest in making us better.

Serge had knee surgery and has quite frankly not been as good--as well, he'll demand a hefty contract extension during this decline. I can't think of a worse idea than paying a contract year Dion Waiters either.
Brad really isn't the problem. I know he seems like it now because we're counting on him--but the point is we shouldn't be counting on him to fulfill a 1st option role. We desperately need an all-star caliber two way player to take the pressure off of our backcourt, and we need consistent shooting from the SF spot from three--which Otto isn't providing right now.

I'm not saying Beal is "the problem". He's a useful player - a legit starter in this league. But he is nothing more than that and there isn't much reason to believe he will get much better, yet we will probably get stuck matching a max offer for him. If he can be traded for a true two-way big man with perimeter range, I'm all in.
I agree that Waiters is garbage. This trade is Beal for Ibaka. Nene and Waiters are filler.

What about Rakeem Christmas. Any way we could pry him away from the Pacers?

Maybe the Knicks will look to trade Melo this offseason? If so I would do a Beal sign and trade to Knicks for Melo. If Durant comes here that would be a heck of a team if Melo and Durant could go coexist which is a question.

Knicks fan here. Everyone knows that you guys aren't going anywhere without a real first option anyways and KD prolly isn't even thinking about signing for Wizards at all, so you gotta trade for that star.
Melo for Beal + Porter + 2016 Washington First Rounder
This way you might be able to actually make it out of the second round for once and we'll get some pieces to build around Porz.

If and when the Wizards miss out on Durant this summer, (which I think is likely) I can see them turning their attention to Melo. But it doesn't make sense to do so now.
I think the trade you proposed is a little bit of an overpay based on Melo's age and injury history. If we were talking Nene (exp) + Beal + pick, I'd be more interested.
