Yooo fellas. I had a phone interview with Drew Hanlen to talk about offseason training and in particular his two Wizards. I couldn't fit everything into the piece but let me know if you guys have any questions that I may have asked him. Check it out!
Sorry mods for making a new thread. Didn't know where to park this!

Great read. Guy seems really smart--takes all the analytics into account, watches every possession, focuses on improvement the team wants to keep him on the court while working towards the skills to get the player the role he wants--that's especially perfect Oubre.
Seems to really know what his players need to. Glad to hear Brad will work on an off the dribble three ball--its really necessary to get to an elite level offensively and will boost his 3 point attempts.

Great read! I am very intrigued with Kelly. He's shown he can hit the 3 and he has the tools to be good defensively.

I agree with Dark Faze and FAH1223, great read jivelikenice!
I lived in the St. Louis, MO, area in the 90s. Chaminade prep HS is where the Beal brothers and David Lee all played--Hanlen must be from near there if he played against the older brothers. (When I was living nearby, Darius Miles was starring in East Saint Louis , IL. I had heard of David Lee even then).
I'm encouraged that Oubre will be getting the best training possible, judging by Hanlen's philosophies, work ethic, and his impressive client list.

The only part I wonder about in his answers was putting team need from a player then simply developing a player in every facet possible. In a vacuum it makes sense to address what a team may need more from a player... but if EG is telling Hanlen what he wants Beal and Oubre to become... I kinda wonder if he is making reasonable requests. Basically, I think addressing team need first is ok if said organization is competent.... :I
Otherwise that was a good and mostly comforting read

One player I talked up a lot in the past got a couple ten day contracts, primarily by mentioning a role he could fill that happened to match a team need. Although he was a scorer this guy sold the Wizards on his defense. He played really good defense in his few minutes.
It makes sense to me that rotation players try and "get in where they fit in". The gatekeeper to all playing time is the coaching staff. Their mindset is that of any boss. Just like EG seems to be a master of pleasing his boss so should the young guys suck up to the coach, at least until they get a footing on minutes.
Seems to me Drew Hanlen is really just training them foremost to gain entrance or pass the initial interview so to speak. Specializing on a narrow skill set first makes sense. Coaches reflexively hate mistakes from younger players. Most of them do. The thing about Oubre I like is he's BOLD by nature. Hanlen might intend to focus Oubre.
