WASHINGTON -- Washington Wizards All-Star guard John Wall underwent left knee surgery and is expected to be ready for the start of next season, the team said Thursday.

The team said Wall had a procedure done to excise calcific deposits in his left patella tendon to eliminate pain and help him heal. He also underwent an arthroscopic lavage on his right knee to remove loose bodies.

Wall's chances of playing in the 2016 Rio Olympics are likely over as a result. He was named among the 30 finalists for the national team roster.

I thought Wall's chances to make the Olympic team were slim and none, anyway (although it would've been nice to have him onsite in full recruiting mode). I'm more concerned about his fitness level come training camp: it's one thing to be "ready to start the season," it's quite another to arrive at training camp in the best shape of his life. :-?

Sounds like a real minor surgery. He'll probably only be out of commission for a month or so. That'll give him plenty of time to work on his game in the offseason and round into shape by training camp.

Yeah. My cousin runs marathons and she had the same procedure.

Routine procedure.

Hmm. Actually, he had surgery on *both* knees.

Playing through discomfort all season, John Wall had procedures on both knees Thursday but is expected to be ready for the start of the Wizards' 2016-17 season, the team announced.

The left knee was the bigger problem and it required the surgery to "excise calcific deposits in his left patella tendon," similar to bone spurs, to alleviate discomfort. He had an "arthroscopic lavage," or in generic terms a washing out of loose bodies, in his right knee.

I hope so. 'Cause this guy sounds ever-so-slightly shook.

EDIT: Wall should be ready to start the season -- but he may not be ready by training camp. Not ideal, given that Brooks will likely be installing a new system. :(

is expected to be ready for the start of next season, but his status for training camp is unknown and he won’t be available to play for Team USA in the Olympics this summer. Wall was one of 31 finalists for the 12-man roster headed to Rio Janeiro in August but was considered a long shot to make the team.

Wall attended the Cleveland Cavaliers’ playoff win over the Atlanta Hawks at Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday night before he had loose particles taken out of his right knee and calcium deposits removed from his left patella tendon by orthopedic surgeon Richard D. Parker at the Cleveland Clinic Marymount. The right knee procedure – known as an arthroscopic lavage – is considered routine and relatively minor, but the operation on the left knee would’ve sidelined Wall for months had he undergone it during the season.

I am shook when ever a stranger has knife and intentions to cut me...

As the resident Wall critic, I recall speculating that part of the trouble with Wall's play late in the season had to do with his legs on defense. I think the injuries really hampered him. Part of what may have seemed IMO like a lack of competitiveness at the defensive end and a willingness to settle for a jumper on offense might have been Wall compensating due to knee pain and limited mobility.

This will sound cold but the value of a speed guard should diminish with knee procedures.

No such thing as minor/routine surgery when it involves a thoroughbred IMO. Wall's play has perhaps peaked and he may continue to have knee issues here on out.

Wall has a better jumper than other guards in that category though. I can see him sustaining a good level of play as his body wanes if he improves his shot selection, which imo will happen inevitably as he's phased out of offenses once he's older.

Well, if we are smart and slowly bring Wall back from the surgeries, I think our playoff chances for next year are slim & none.

I know that is pessimistic but... this might be the year to intentionally develop our young new players and strategize about the following year. Of course, that isn't a possibility with Ted.

So, Wall's coming back tonight -- sooner than expected.

When's the last time a Wizard came back sooner than expected? :o I'm torn between being excited and nervous that he's coming back too soon. Still: I'm glad he'll get some in-game reps with Scott's new system before the season starts.

I think Arenas came back sooner than expected, a couple of times.

My heart dropped when I saw this thread today 8-)

But this is good news. He had already been competing in 5 on 5s so it was just a matter of time. So much for the thought he'd be out until December or January.
