Jason Smith, 3 yr/$16M deal
Welcome to the Wizards, Jason Smith.
[tweet]https://twitter.com/JMichaelCSN/status/750470918389002240[/tweet]
Based on a quick glance at Basketball-Reference, he's kind of a stretch 4/5.
EDIT: that might be 3 years, $5M+ *per*.

EDIT: and here's JMichael's delayed retraction:

Re: Jason Smith, 3 yr deal
Awful reporting by J. Michael, getting out scooped like that. He had it at 3 yrs/$5 million. And that is a ton of $ being spent on centers.

Re: Jason Smith, 3 yr/$16M deal
FWIW, NBAdraft.net compared him to Brian Cook. Based on a few YouTube highlights, he's got a decent midrange jumper, and can knock down the occasional three. I don't mind him as an emergency big, although I'd rather have spent that money on a 3-D swingman or a utility swingman/combo guard to replace Temple.

Yeah, I expect the retraction/correction tweet to come out any minute now.

And that is a ton of $ being spent on centers.
+1 -- although at least he fills a very different role than Mahinmi. I suppose this is the price of a decent emergency/niche big for non-super teams.
I will say this: after going all in on SFs last year (at the expense of front court depth), Egg's pendulum has swung entirely in the other direction. We'll now have Gortat, Morris, Mahinmi, Nicholson, and Smith in the front court.

Re: Jason Smith, 3 yr deal
You guys got another good one. Nicholson and Smith are going to kill ORL I can already see it...
For those who unaware of Jason Smith the guys automatic from midrange... He carried Orlando's offense many many times. I guarantee you he will always BRING IT when he's on the court.
If you have a sec go check out his block on Middleton from last season(I would post it but idk how to embed
)
Its amazing.

Thanks for the insight. Nicholson's the younger player and, presumably, would have more upside. They both averaged ~15 pg for the Magic last year. Which of the two was the more effective player, based on your eye test?

Re: Jason Smith, 3 yr/$16M deal
Another one of Ernie's "we've had our eye on him for a while" types. They almost drafted him coming out of college. Fits the Darius Songalia, Kris Humphries profiles but softer... He's more mid-range than anything. I don't like the signing because he doesn't defend nor does he adequately stretch the floor, a bit of throw back big, Ernie has a hard on for these types... maybe the third time is the charm or more likely Ernie doesn't learn and commits the same blunder over and over again.
The money could have been better spent elsewhere but I guess I sound like a broken record now.

Between the two Smith was the consistent vet that Skiles relied on more. Nicholson for Orlando was a weird situation because he could never consistently stay in our rotation.(Pretty much since the day we drafted him).
With that being said I can assure you Nicholson showed promise in stretches last season. He was almost unstoppable at times on offense. You will appreciate both of them coming off your bench.

Yeah, I might be ok with it since he's our 3rd center and 3rd power forward, but he is incredibly soft. I'd rather have a younger, cheaper big who you can develop and spend the money on a decent wing. But I guess with Gerald Henderson gone, there's literally nothing left that we can afford.

So that's the strategy: find a way to beat Orlando! Strike one for Grunfeld. One team down...

He's our backup PF?
At this point, we have two pure Cs, one PF/C, and two PFs who can play small-ball C. Meanwhile, we're currently relying on a rookie and a second-year project to backup injury-prone Beal.

Typical Ernie Grunfail roster imbalance

I expect Alan Anderson to be signed soon.

I *hope* he's dirty. We could use a dirty guy, and a guy who knows how to set a Noah/Bogut/Tristan Thompson-esque moving screen. In today's NBA, the ability to set a moving screen alone could earn you $10M+/year.

I agree a very mediocre move. He is tall and can shoot(inside 3), but that is about it. Not ancient, but likely to decline at least slightly.
