If ATL poaches Shep: how big of a loss would that be?

Hilarious!!! Why? Each time Ernie's has been available to be stolen by another team (Twice), none of them were blowing-up Ted's phone clamoring to get an interview with Ernie, while the assistants have been. Assistants who have been around a franchise FO, but are not Ernie himself.

Huge mistake. Sheppard and Weaver should be in the Pres/GM of this franchise... What a joke

Always great to see a guy get a chance to move forward in his career, so I'm happy about this.
As to its effect on us, if Sheppard has had a big voice in our talent evaluations, then we aren't losing much. If he hasn't, then it can't make much difference either.

Yup. Based on our failed signings and trades it's clear that he's either incompetent or has too small of a voice to sway Ernie.

One pus might be if the Wizards are seen as a place where careers advance, it might attract quality employees to the front office.
However the misdirection seems to come from the top.

I wonder who gave them permission, Grunfeld?

Please take him
Sheppard’s role in Washington includes responsibilities with salary cap management, negotiations, draft preparation and talent evaluation of collegiate athletes and professionals, both domestically and abroad. Additional responsibilities of Sheppard’s include an assisting role in the recruitment and evaluation of free agents, statistical evaluation of NBA players, the hiring of coaches and personnel, and monitoring the Wizards’ efforts in the NBA’s Player Program

I saw picture of EG with Hawks interviewing for GM job and my heart almost stopped... I thought this is the day! The judgement day! Last day of Ernie as a Wiz GM. But no:/y eyes or my mind teased me.

ANY FO change would be welcome. ANY new voice that Ernie would theoretically listen to, would be welcome. This is desperate, but its the only hope we have.

I keep hearing talk about how Sheppard is such a bright up-and-comer in NBA circles. I don't get it. What exactly has he done to get this reputation? What inspired picks, free agency acquisitions, or trades have the Wizards made in the past 5 years?
At best, the Wizards have proven to be pretty competent at dumping bad contracts with reasonable success. They unloaded Arenas' gargantuan dead weight contract for Rashard Lewis', which was then swapped for Okafor and Ariza. Dumping Jamison's fat contract for Cleveland's pick was pretty nice. The Hinrich Maneuver was good. Vesely for Andre Miller helped us a bit. Unloading 4 years of Nicholson for just a #23 pick was good. But none of these moves suggest any prowess with talent evaluation. The front office is somewhat successful at being cheap. That's it.

Some day I'll tell the story of how I tried to become the Warriors GM more than 40 years ago. It's a little funny & more than a little embarrassing!

Pretty much agree, on the face of it. Could it be there's a perception that Leo n EGgo and their system hold bright subordinates back? It's kind of a risky move without concrete evidence. Maybe behind the scenes Sheppard has contemporaneously shared dissenting opinions on key moves, like say on drafting Vesely ("I wanted Kawhi Leonard") or signing Maynor, that allow him to be viewed as an asset waiting for a chance.
