Wizards sign Donald Sloan

Post#1 » by keynote » Thu Aug 17, 2017 10:21 pm

Read on Twitter

I did *not* see this coming. I guess the rumors of Dwyane Wade becoming available via buyou spooked EG into thinking he may be expected to try and recruit him.

The Wizards added some depth to their backcourt on Thursday by signing veteran guard Donald Sloan to a one-year deal, according to a report by Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports.

Sloan joins the Wizards after not appearing in the NBA last year. He last played for the Brooklyn Nets and appeared in 61 games in 2015-16.

A 29-year-old combo guard, Sloan is joining his sixth NBA team. He spent the 2016-17 season with the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China.

I hope it's a non-guaranteed deal, and that Sloan is just a training camp body.

It all makes sense now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Sloan_%28basketball%29

On July 3, 2013, he signed a two-year deal with the Indiana Pacers and joined them for the 2013 NBA Summer League.[28] In July 2014, he re-joined the Pacers for the 2014 NBA Summer League.[29] On November 5, 2014, he scored a career-high 31 points in the Pacers' 96–94 overtime loss to the Washington Wizards

Actually, not a bad signing assuming he's getting the veteran minimum, but who's going? Maybe they realized that trading for Frazier was foolish.

I can't imagine that he'd leapfrog Frazier in the rotation. I assume he'll vie for minutes vs. Mac and Sato. The difference is that the latter two are young players who we'd like to develop, whereas Sloan has zero upside.

Does this mean that Meeks is not ready? I don't understand the signing with Sato and Mac already on-board. Brooks probably wants to Nicholson Sato.

Sloan didn't play in the league last season. As a rookie in 2011-12, he played @650 minutes & was very bad. His 2d season he only played 360 minutes & was still bad -- but better than as a rookie. His 3d season it was just under 400 minutes, still bad, but again an improvement over the previous year.

Then, 2014-15 & 2015-16, he played 1100 minutes & 1300 minutes, and... he played very well! Especially the last of those 2 years, when he was like a better version of... Tim Frazier! :) or Tony Douglas, or Josh Richardson.

If, instead of trading for Frazier, we'd made our R2 pick & signed Sloan as a FA, I would have loved the moves. & it's still a good move to sign Sloan at a veteran minimum salary (I think that's all we could have paid him). Except...

...we already have 15 guys with guaranteed salaries. & 6 of them are guards! So...

...somebody is going to go -- but who? If it's a guard, obviously it won't be Wall, Beal, Meeks or Frazier -- unless maybe 1 of the last 2 is injured. Meeks?

Perhaps Satoransky has thought better of his NBA experiment & wants out?

Most likely, however, if a guard goes it'll be Sheldon Mac. I'd be sorry to see that happen, as Sheldon has upside & he could be a valuable trade asset too -- if he continues to develop.

But, who knows, maybe someone else will be cut -- Ochefu would be the most likely candidate, if so. Waiving McCullough would be more expensive. I can't see any other options.... Can anyone else?

Wall / Frazier / Sloan
Beal / Sato / Meeks / Mac
Otto / Oubre
Morris / Scott / CMC
Mahinmi / Gortat / Smith

I like this starting the season. Sato can get minutes at the 3 as can Mac. I thought we might add a wing player, but Sloan is good enough for the vet min.

This is just a camp deal. Pretty sure Mac will outplay him anyway.

I think Ochefu is the one most affected by this move . He's the 4th string C that we don't need. I think Mac and Sato are the 3rd string guys at the 2/3.

C Gortat, Mahinmi, Smith
F Morris, Scott, McCullough
F Porter, Oubre, Satoransky
G Beal, Meeks, Mac
G Wall, Frazier, Sloan

I think we lead the league in marginal replacement level vets, smh.

We are John Wall, Bradley Beal, Otto Porter + 15 marginal replacement level vets. It's a central part of the plan. Suck badly enough to draft top 3 three times, whiff or pass on all other draft picks, sign whoever the f0ck is available when you get back from your sxx tour of Thailand.
