A bench, a bench! My kingdom for a bench!
The bench still stinks. Tim Frazier looked like A.J. Price. Why not play Sato? He can't be worse. Mike Scott and Jodie Meeks are competent bench players. Will this bench be significantly improved by April?

The bench is fine, or at least it was fine last night. They scored an efficient 41 which would of been reason to celebrate last year.

AJ Price was pretty good for us.

Sato was bad last year. Play him because after one game our bench looked eh? Are we already throwing in the white towel lol. He hasn't proven he can run the point at all, in preseason or season games really.

I dont think Frazier is bad. He is an average to just above average bench PG. The problem is that we have nobody on the bench who can score. The defense played by the bench unit will improve over time to the point where they make the stops needed. But they will not be able to score on the other end. Somebody needs to step up.

Obviously too early, but I think we've got some potential scoring options on the bench. Jodie Meeks looked good when we ran plays through him. And Mike Scott is a poor man's Kief in that he can create his own shot. Plus, Oubre looked much improved and if he continues to get minutes with the starters, we can stagger Porter/Kief with the bench unit as well. We're definitely in better shape than last year - I'm willing to give some more time to see how it gels together.

Bench scored decently last night, but gave up a lot of ground. Some of that may be Brooks's rotations, but it remains to be seen that the bench is fine.

Tjarks @ Ringer on Oubre
https://www.theringer.com/nba/2017/10/20/16506934/kelly-oubre-wizards-bench-depth
Found this interesting "Scott Brooks is an old-school coach. He doesn’t like to stagger the minutes of his starters, which is why Washington had one of the most dramatic plus-minus splits in the NBA between their first and second units last season. Brooks will take all five starters out at the same time and leave his reserves to sink or swim. He doesn’t simplify the offense for them. Running complicated half-court sets with Tim Frazier and Jodie Meeks in place of John Wall and Bradley Beal is difficult enough in the regular season. It’s almost impossible in the playoffs, when the competition increases and defenses know every wrinkle in the playbook"
Do NBA teams run simplified sets for bench units?

All I’m saying is the bench’s performance was pretty good vs the 6ers. In fact if we get that production from the bench on a regular basis and the starters stay healthy we are looking at a 55+ win season.

Re: A bench, a bench! My kingdom for a bench!
The bench, playing as a unit, played poorly, giving up good sized leads twice.
But compared to last year we're in good shape.
Meeks is light years better than Thornton.
Scott much better than Nicholson.
Healthy Mahinmi better than injured Mahinmi.
Oubre developing nicely.
PG is the question. I just hope they don't stick with Frazier if he doesn't produce. He has to be more of a scoring threat to justify his playing time. Especially with the much better defender Sato sitting on the bench.
Would like to see if Felix can contribute. If Oubre starts until Morris comes back, then it's a good time to try Felix as backup SF.

Sato remains a question mark largely because he doesn't get many minutes. Tim Frazier showed me nothing on Wednesday. Could Sato be much worse? If he is, then why is he on the roster?

Are there people still defending this bench? What about Frazier? If he is unwilling or unable to shoot, how much of an improvement over Brandon Jennings is he?

Tim Frazier's +/- was somehow 0 in this one. It didn't feel like it though as the Wizards gave up their lead in the 4th.

That's astounding. I was at the game and he looked terrible. It seems like he's afraid to shoot. Also, he kept trying to run pick and rolls with Mahinmi. Unfortunately, Ian struggles to catch the ball.

Frazier is being a pass first PG. He doesnt look to score first. He looks to get others around him rolling. Problem is that nobody on the bench is a reliable scorer. There is no "go to" player in the bench, no creator. IMO, it's everyone around him that's making him look bad. If we can just get one scorer off the bench, someone who doesnt play D even, I think we would be in a much better place with regards to the bench.
Although this years bench is an improvement over last years bench, we will still struggle to put points up, and hold up other teams from making a run.

Ironic, Ish Smith is yet another PG we had around that would be better than what we have in Fraizer

Usually there have been at least intriguing options for bench guards in the now G league. I worry that with the 2 way deals that most of that talent level will be committed to another team.

Perhaps we’re looking at this wrong. The bench isn’t the problem. It’s the scrubs sitting on it.

Is "old school coach" code for bad coach? what does playing a 5 man bench unit have to do with being old school? We don't even run complex sets outside of a Meeks reverse pin down action, Frazier just doesn't create anything due to his lack of explosive athletic ability and ability to create any separation or put pressure on the D. Also doesn't shoot it well or play any defense at all. its like a combination of the worst qualities of Brandon Jennings and Trey Burke.

Someone in the G-League this year is going to be better than Fraizer, I would look to pinch one of those guys.
