Wizards plans moving forward

Hello All,

I've got a quick question. Wizards are spending 123 million this year, next year will be big money and the year after probably even bigger with Oubres extension.

From My calculation going into the summer before 19/20 season

Wall
Beal
Porter
Mahimi

that will be 108 million just for those 4 guys. I imagine Oubre is going to get at least 20 million somewhere maybe more just like Porter.

Do you anticipate moving Porter? Oubre? Neither? Maybe just a 1st round pick to Mahimi and try for expirings?

I wonder what prospects it would take to add to a George Hill/Randolph for Porter/Mahimi next deadline.

Obviously Porter is by far and away the best piece but, the cap savings would be almost an instant 6 million (depending on what prospects are included). Then the summer Oubre needs an extension you would be saving nearly 40 million with Hill and Randolph expiring.

Id easily be willing to include a combo of Richardson, Papa, Justin Jackson, potentially even Skal to give the Wizards cheap young role players.

Realistically what do you see the Wizards doing, AND what prospects would it take for you as Wizards fans to feel comfortable making a trade like that.

most of us expect to unload contracts(Mahinmi, Smith, Gortat) using draft picks, but the more Porter struggles and the more these locker room turmoil stories grow, and the continued mediocre performance of the team, the more and more likely an Otto Porter trade becomes.

without doing any research on those guys, just going off of watching them in college leading up to the draft, I would probably be interested in moving Otto for a combination of Skal, Jackson and Richardson (loved him at syracuse).

we could really use George Hill though.

Truthfully,

With Porter going out that will open more minutes for Oubre. While you are able to groom Jackson. Basically extending that out, Oubre becomes the new Porter, while Jackson becomes the new Oubre.

Then substituting Mahimi with Randolph/Hill. I actually think it makes the Wizards better in the short run and opens up much more cap flexibility in the long run.

Come summer going into 19/20 the Wizards will have Beal/Wall/Oubres cap hold and a ton of cap space to attract another star.

Kevin Love seems like a good target for that group.

The fish rots from the head down.

We ought to break up the Big 2.5.

Beal’s the only one I’m sure I want to keep. And we need cap relief. Here’s my moves:

    * Trade Wall and Mahinmi for Love, expiring filler and the Brooklyn first.
    * Use the first on the best PG we can draft. Collin Sexton may be available at the 8th spot. Sign a crafty vet (Wade? Tony Allen?) to mentor and play backup till kid is NBA ready.
    * Otto needs to justify his max contract. He gets one more year to show he can spread his wings. The change in team leadership may be key. Play him as a small ball 4.
    * Send Gortat and our own first to Utah for a wing like Alec Burks with a shorter contract. (Good piece on The Ringer making the case.)
We go into 18-19 with a starting 5 of Beal / Sato / Oubre / Porter / Love and off the bench Burks, Morris and TBD crafty vet PG. If Wall’s mentality is the problem we’ll be a better performing team, better suited to today’s 3-centric game with a Love Porter frontcourt, with the Nets late lotto pick in a historically stacked draft.

By summer 2020 we’d have around $65M in cap relief, if we chose to let a then-32 Love walk. Voila, salary tax hell averted, and we’ve kept Oubre and Porter.

Pay Scott Brooks 21 million more after this season.

Continue to live in hell because of Ernie Grunfeld and his affiliation with Ted Leonsis.

Slip below mediocre.

Fire Ernie

Get a new GM. Let him draft some kids this summer. Let him unload Smith, Meeks and one of the Cs

Brooks gets to coach another year.

Burn in luxury tax hell and watch Ernie trade another 1st round pick

Immediate plans should be to...

A. Rest Otto. He's obviously not right physically. I'd shut him down till after the break. Don't forget how good he was to start the year.

B. Bench Morris & Gortat. Morris was already a low energy guy and now Gortat has become that way defensively. We won't survive the 1st round with these two starting. Start Mahinmi, Scott & Oubre until Porter returns.

C. Limit Wall's minutes. He's a little bit of A & B. I'd try to keep it to about 30-34 until he's right. He recently admitted he still isn't.

D. I'd put Frazier back in the rotation so Sato can eat all of the wing minutes effectively benching Meeks. A little twist to this is that I'd suggest Frazier play off the ball running around picks and being aggressive. Have him focus more on scoring. In New Orleans, Frazier wasn't great but he showed more scoring instincts than he's displaying now.

Long term plans should be:

A. See if the Wall/Beal/Porter/Oubre core can work before blowing things up. Yes we are over the tax but we have a little time before Wall's extension kicks in. Frankly its complimentary pieces that should we should focus on addressing immediately by getting younger and more modern up front and trimming all of fat - contract wise.

B. Dump Morris for an expiring & a high 2nd rounder if possible. That might be optimistic but i think there is a decent chance a front office that be willing to part with a 2nd rd pick. Even if not, i move Morris for an expiring 3/4.

C. Keep the 1st rd 2018 Draft pick, its a great draft and we need bodies. Be willing to spend money to buy multiple 2nd rd picks (i.e. cheap controllable contracts). It will help lessen the luxury tax burden.

D. See if anyone will take a flyer on Gortat. I'd give him away but I certaintly wouldn't cough up a 1st rounder. This is what I hope Ernie doesn't do the most with our 2018 pick. Amir Johnson for Gortat & future 2nd? Would Philly bite on that? If not maybe buy him out if he takes a discount or simply reduce him to a bench role until his ocntract expires or he decides to retire early.

Fail. Be prepared to pay a 2019 1st or more to move Ian Mahinmi before the trade deadline NEXT year. It's painful. It likely has to be done. Even if he plays decently in a starting role and stays healthy. He's still a dinasour in today's NBA.

A little shocked by your response but Im sure you know more than me.

I would have thought Wall is the last one to go. You guys are still 6th in the East a game out from 4th and that is with Morris/Gortat not playing great and Wall missing some time. I often wondered why Oubre hasnt replaced Morris in the starting lineup yet?

I don't hate your suggestions, I just question if Beal can play pg and if Love/Porter as a front court could succeed. That would be a real weak front court without much rim protection.

Oubre hasn’t replaced Morris because Scott Brooks is our coach. He has no idea what he is doing.

I'm praying that 2018 pick isn't traded. I really am sick of the short sighted deadline moves by this stupid GM.

Solid points all around Dat

It starts with firing Ernie and taking a long hard look at shaking up the moribund foundation of this organization.

At this point to me there isn't anybody that's affiliated with this front office in a decision making capacity that has any credibility left.

From what they've done in the draft, their scouting, to how they've disseminated the free agent market and how they have structure and negotiated contracts, everything about this organization is rotten to the core.

Ed **** Tapscott, are you **** kidding me?

Grunfeld cronyism needs to die, and the stench that clings to everything associated with his tenure needs to be evacuated along with him.

Brooks is good dude, but his hire was just another uninspiring decision that fits right along with every decision made by the front office. As far as I'm concerned he's on the hotseat next season.

From a roster perspective, well ****, there's not a lot of wiggle room but it's clear that our frontcourt is a disaster and that we need an infusion of youth in the worst way.

If a team is willing to give up a 2nd for Morris I wouldn't hesitate to make the move.

With how the Wizards payroll looks there aren't likely going to be any answers in free agency, so the draft is where Washington needs to focus their energy.

Find guys in the draft that can play and stop it with the focus on athletes with potential..

Those are excellent ideas, all of them.

The only concern is that it would be harder to move Morris and Gortat if you bench them right now. Maybe sit them once as a shot across the bow, but then get them back into the rotation until the Trade Deadline.

I think resting Porter is the most important thing. He needs to get healthy. The team is really struggling without Porter doing the things Porter normally does.

I interpreted this post as OP asking what we thought the wizards would do going forward, not what we wanted to see happen.

I would 100% be shopping Wall right now and looking to build around Beal Oubre and Porter. Ideally find a young PG and young C prospect in the deal.

Hey SAC, you interested in a Wall for De’Aaron Fox+Justin Jackson+Vince Carter swap? Because I would feel like a 9 year old on Christmas if it happened.

Hell, I would take all of the Kings bad contracts plus Fox+their 2018 1st for Wall. Why would SAC do that? No idea

Because they are the Kings :(

Why they signed Hill and Randolph to long-term deals :nonono:

They could have done the Philly move and taken on bad contracts for draft picks and built from the bottom up.

Like Nate said, Wall can't be moved until July 26th, well after the '18 draft. Hopefully you and CCJ can a chill on blowing up the roster for a few months.

My bad, forgot about that.

How is that “blowing up the roster”? they would have to wait on Fox to develop, but they would also have a lottery pick or Justin Jackson and would save like 200 million.

People have proposed Wall for Lillard type trades. Most people want a retool, not a rebuild. We are not going to be able to afford Wall Beal Oubre Porter in 2019, that’s like 115 mill between 4 guys
