Trading for Melo

Wizards receive: Carmelo Anthony
OKC receives: Ian Mahinmi, Marcin Gortat, 2019 2nd rd pick
OKC has the desire to pay Melo 28M just as much as Melo has the desire to come off the bench for the Thunder in 2018. Combine that with Melo coming off his worst year, his trade value is at an all time low. With that said, there’s also a long list of players whose play has clearly improved once they leave OKC. I’m not a fan of the price tag, but it’d essentially be a one year trial run. He’s most productive on the block, but he doesn’t need to live there, opening up lanes for Wall that aren’t normally there with Gortat clogging the lane. Wall can elevate anyone’s game, and a Wall/Melo P&R could potentially be deadly. He’d add an offensive punch the Wiz sorely need, and if three months into the year it’s obvious things aren’t working, the Wiz have a 28M expiring to use as a trade chip. A lineup of Wall, Beal, Otto, Kief & Melo would put up buckets. The team needs a shakeup, and this would do that without sacrificing any of the team’s core pieces.
For OKC, they avoid the future headache that’s undoubtedly Carmelo Anthony in 2018. Gortat would be in his last year, so they can keep him, waive him, or keep him as trade chip. Mahinmi adds a rim protecting backup center the Thunder don’t have (Dakari Johnson is the only other C they currently have on the roster). The only other bigs they have are Jerami Grant, Josh Huestis, Patrick Patterson & Nick Collison. Basically damn near nothing. It’d be an extra year of salary they’d have to pay, but imo the Melo situation will only get worse. They could save around 12M by waiving Gortat, as the owner isn’t a fan of paying the luxury tax. Presti always seems to be able to work some magic.
Anyway, thoughts?
