Eh, not really surprised, this sort of had the same vibe as the Okafor, Webster, Mahinmi and any other major pre-season injury the team nonchalantly tried to sweep under the rug over the years.

Rookie Dwight Howard was so good. Up until his initial back issue he was a beast.

I don't think he's going to be a factor here.

No joke. But can be tolerable
I've had piriformis/sciatic nerve issues on/off for 7-8 years. Its probably something he'll deal with for the season, but with proper stretching/warming up he'll be able to play with no issues

It could have been a lot worse. I’m sure thanks to MedStAr and the new medical equipment inside the wonderful practice facility, Dwight should return by December.

Fwiw, I had the same injury.

Its annoying but relatively minor.

Mine was caused by a kick (martial arts).

Took about a month and a half to really feel normal.

Yup me too. Dang seems like a lot of us are butt-hurt.

Just no extended sitting and proper stretching and he should be good as rain.

The silence on Howard's status, in true Wizards fashion, very telling.

we should be fine with Ian for a bit--main concern is if he gets into foul trouble early, our backup options are rough. Would prefer to see if Thomas Bryant can fill in rather than defaulting to Smith.

There's nothing really to say.

We know the diagnosis and treatment.

Exactly. Zero concern
He may miss 5-10 games throughout the year, but I think Ian has one of his best, if not his best, season as a pro.
Fouls too much, but if his defense is back and FT shooting is for real... then he has a high floor.
Also gives us time to play our small ball lineups and see how Smith is shooting.

Remember, Smith is actually a decent/good defender at the 5. He works hard, blocks shots, is a real good athlete, and is big.
If he is shooting 35-40% from 3 and getting his normal hustle points... Im good with that as an emergency 5.

^^^ As I thought/said. Its not debilitating, but a nuisance.
Another positive in my experience is its not like a back spasm, that randomly comes up during the game in an acute way... more like, plantar fasciitis that is really bad when you're cold, but good to go once you're warmed up.

Smith tries and makes an occational nice play, but he's an awful defender at the 5 - not able to defend anyone on a consistent basis and not quick enough to switch.

Ruz, the stats and eye test dont back you up. Hes not quick enough for 4's and his IQ is low which hurts him in the switch & Team D. But his DPM, DRPM, etc. show him to be "Passable". If his 3 ball is falling, you can certainly get away with him there and create chaos.

Yes, he shoots the 3 which pulls their big out, but he does it fast. He sprints the court and gets to his spot. If he is hitting, the other teams Center might have trouble keeping up.
That said, if he isnt hitting...ouch.
