We are 6-6 in our last 12 games -- an improvement (obviously) on our 1-6 start. In those 7 games, we were down 74 points overall. Then we lost the next game by 23 !! Down 97 points to the league in 8 games. Truly horrible.

Since then, we are 6-5. @ we are up 1 pt. overall in that stretch. So, definitely an improvement.

But, 7 of those 11 games have been at home. & 4 of the 6 wins have been over the Cavs, Knicks, Magic & Heat. Our one road win in that stretch was against the Heat who are 3-7 at home.

IOW, I wouldn't say this stretch offers much evidence that we are in any sense a "good" team. But, we aren't as bad as that start to the season.

Yes. We are not good yet, but over the past 11 games, we are playing like a 6-8 seed in the East. We are winning the games a mediocre team is supposed to win and losing the games a mediocre team is supposed to lose. There have been two outliers that balance each other out: the loss to Brooklyn and the win against the Clippers.

The problem with playing like even a 6th seed is the whole the Wizards dug in the beginning of the season means they need to play like a 4th or 5th seed to get the 7th or 8th seed. This is especially true if the East ends up better than recent history.

Right, I think the baseline expectation for this team should be 41-46 wins with reasonably good health. I predicted lower thinking some significant injury to Wall or Beal might knock them down.

Nate -- I think you are being slightly optimistic.

Why? Because we are up 1 point total (i.e. .09 points per game) in that stretch. Yet, 7 of those games were at home. Plus, it was a cherry pick on my part -- if, instead of the last 11 games, you look at either the last 12 games or the last 10 games we are down vs the league.

Thus, in the last 10 games, we've gone 5-5 but have been down by 12 points. 6 of the 10 games were at home. We've played the Magic twice, the Cavs, the Heat, the Mavericks & the Nets. We've also played 4 better teams: the Raps, the Clippers, the Blazers & the Pelicans (...tho without Anthony Davis).

I'd say that 10-game run suggests that we are a below .500 team. Does that suggest we are a 6-8 seed in the East? In some years, perhaps. Last year, we won 43 games & were the 8th seed.

Verbal's point is good: to win 43 games this year, we'd have to go 36-27 the rest of the way. Not impossible, in principle. But, for a team that's gone 7-12 so far? Very unlikely!

Perhaps. Though calling them mediocre isn't exactly optimistic.

I feel like the Wizards, after an embarrassing first 11 games, are now playing like a competent, mediocre team. Over the last 8 games, and certainly since the shakeup of the roster, 3 games ago I feel like they've been pretty decent. They're not giving up nearly as many wide open looks from 3 or uncontested layups. Even the Toronto game was better. They lost that not because they were thoroughly outclassed on a possession-by-possession basis, but because they shot 7-44 from 3-point range over the first 47 minutes of the game.

I think that if they continue to play like they've played recently, they're maybe a .500 team, which might be enough to get into the playoffs given how bad the bottom of the East is. I wouldn't go so far as to say they've righted the ship, because .500 ball in the East is still kinda lousy. But I do think they've stopped the bleeding.

EDIT: I see from my previous post that I gave the impression that I thought the Wizards would make a 6-8 seed based on the way they are playing now. That's not what I meant. I meant that if the Wizards started off the season playing like they are now, they'd make the 6-8 seed. That is, they are currently playing as well as a 6-8 seed. But since they dug themselves such a hole, they're going to have to play even better to make the playoffs.

With 21 games in the books - youuuuuuur Washington Wizards are 8 and 13 with a .381 winning percentage, on track to win 31 games.

Big A is the leader in the clubhouse...

We're 14-8, & I'm in the lead. Hey, wait a minute....

9 of the Wizards next 12 games are on the road. Expect a sh*tstorm.

Yah, but 6 of those 12 are against Atlanta (2x), Brooklyn, Cleveland, NYK and Phoenix.

And two are against Victor-less Indy (who's 3-4 without him, and he's out indefinitely).

Plus 2 home games against LA (who's 5-5 on the road) and Boston (6-7 on road)

That makes 10 winnable games in the rest of the month. The only obvious Ls are Houston and probably Detroit on the road.

December might actually be an opportunity to play some above .500 ball over an extended stretch!

This is turning into the typical heartbreak season for wizards fans. The Wizards started off so slow that some of us actually dreamed that the end for eg was near. However, the Wizards have been playing well after their 2-9 start. In fact if they keep this up, they will probably either make the playoffs, or just miss them. But don’t worry, even if they make the playoffs, they will probably be knocked out in the first round. “Given the injuries and other unforeseeable circumstances” Ted will decide it is only right to give eg another secret extension.

Return to Washington Wizards
