That Maryland loss to Illinois was so Turge-like. If they lose to Northwestern on Tuesday, they are going to start heading back to the bubble. I don't care how young that team is, they rebound like monsters and defend ok (not in transition). No reason to lose to a bad Illinois team on a neutral court.

Solid win over Northwestern. Hopefully back on track though Wisconsin on the road is going to be very tough on Friday. Big 10 basketball at its worst. NW is so dull and was terrible from the field. Shooting around 26%. At least Ayala got his stroke back and Sticks, well, still is struggling with the physicality of the game.

Bruno Fernando is a beast. This is a testament to him staying for one more year, good job by him and the coaching staff. His post moves have improved tremendously. In terms of talent, he's might be the best pure five guy Maryland has ever had. I'm talking about in relation to being an NBA prospect but also the combination of size, speed, athletic ability, power, finesse, moves, shotblocking ability. I really didn't see Len Elmore but I go back to Buck Williams and loved him as a player but he's a potentially better offensive player. Buck could do D up anybody including Ralph Sampson.

Didn't watch but seems like a typical Turgeon loss at Wisconsin, judging from the box score.

Cowan jacks a lot of shots. Why more than Fernando and Jalen Smith combined?

Looks like UMd got blitzed in half two.

I don't know if it was a typical loss. Fernando got in foul trouble in the second half. His second foul was bogus. Came on a perfect block of a Happ shot and then he picked up his third on a charge (good call) moments later. He sat about 10 minutes and then Sticks put his third as well. So Happ and the officials got the frontcourt into foul trouble. Yet, that's the way the road is. You have to figure out a way to score in the second half, which they didn't. Turge keeps using the we're the fifth-youngest team in the nation excuse after every loss and then took a shot at the refs because Maryland went to the line about a 1/3 as many time as the Badgers and normally it's the other way around.

Long as Turge keeps recruiting 40-watt/5 star one-and-done players like Diamond Stone; he'll stay around long enough to get to 0-36 on the road against ranked teams that Mark Turdsgen coaches @Maryland. He's not Ernie Grunfeld bad, but there's a limit and that dude clearly CANNOT break through it. Turgeon REALLY REMINDS ME OF SCOTT BROOKS in inflexibility.

In fairness, OFFICIATING ON THE ROAD in the Big10 is brutal. Same as the last days of when Turgeon's Terps were an ACC team.

Regardless, the dude's a decent-to-good coach who recruits well. PERIOD.

COOL!

Then, THIS:

Turgeon FINALLY has a group of backcourt players who are going to stay a while. UNFORTUNATELY, Bruno's not going to stick around like Happ or the dudes at University of Virginia. Their bigs don't go pro after Frosh of Soph seasons.

Like I said, Turgeon's decent/good and road officiating is bad. THANKS, 80s!

I LOVE these Terps. THEY CAN MAKE THE FINAL 4... but, only if Cowan lets the young guards help a lot and Turgeon's smart enough to manage Bruno's fouls. Guys like Bender and Tomaic are worse than hood ornaments. Lindo should play a lot earlier. Serrel Smith and Ayala are savvy but Cowan is IMO a bit of shot-jacker.

THE TALENT IS ABUNDANT, and I haven't even mentioned Jalen Smith, who seems to be regressing.
Bye bye Beal.

A bunch of those fouls that Happ drew were ridiculous - particularly the ones against Fernando. Happ is not getting those calls in the NBA. I don't think a lot of his chances of succeeding in the NBA - though no doubt he is intriguing with his wide variety of skills. He's actually not a terrible defender because he's got quick hands.

I've seen Happ listed anywhere from 6-10, 240 to 6-8. If he's legit 6-10, which I doubt, I think he has a shot. At 6-8, 240, to me, he's Luke Maye without the jumper. He's a tremendous college basketball player, really smart, passes well out of double teams. Can't shoot free throws, around 47%. That's horrific. Old school power forwards without a consistent jump shot. Not liking his chances.

To me, there was one really bad call on Fernando. The others were understandable. He just ran over a guy on the third. Happ draws fouls well. He posts up right underneath the basket practically and their guards feed him well (unlike Md's guards).

What I don't understand is why Sticks Smith continues to post up against guys Happ's size when he's so weak. He's a face-up four right now.

Bad coaches are not the type to fix problems with team and player execution.

Sticks isn't gonna get stronger this season. Better sets should be devised to feature his face up game.

OTOH, Lindo, in the VERY BRIEF game footage I've seen, already has a few good post up moves.

I like Lindo a lot and I think if Sticks returns, they'll have a nice frontcourt tandem next season assuming both put on weight. I think Lindo is even thinner at 6-7, 190. He's very long and athletic though but his post game is pretty raw as well. Also have Mithcell twins coming in.

Look, if you get a one-and-done guy, make sure he's better than Diamond Stone. Fernando is two-and-done, Huerter was two-and-done, hopefully Sticks is two-and-done. Most of the other guys he has are four-year guys like Cowan, Serrel Smith, Morsell, Wiggins, Ayala, Lindo, etc.

I don't think Turgeon gets that basketball has evolved since the 1970's. He wants to go with 2 bigs clogging the middle and doesn't seem to understand the value of spacing and recruiting great shooters - instead he recruits guys like Morsell. I hope that changes with the Mitchell brothers, but look at their other recruit for 2019 - Donta Scott - known as a defensive specialist. I am not optimistic about the future.
