At that price Smith is a backup's backup. Still: what does that mean for Sato?

Upon reflextion, this presumably cuts into our MLE. We don't have much space in the MLE left (~$3m?) to sign any other guard of consequence. Which would signal that we *really* need to sign Sato, if we want to avoid going into the season with Ish and min. salary player to be nnamed later as our PG rotation.

He had a PPA of 56 according to Kevin.
Bad signing.

Nope. Sato is a RFA. We can match any offer and cap space is limited to like 2 teams right now.

Meh.
Don’t really get it.
Couldn’t we get similar production from league minimum guys like Choizza, etc.

Sato's gone. We're in the Ish Smith era now.

Wizards doubling down on his 2017/18 season with the Pistons?
If Washington gets that guy they're alright, if they get last years version this isn't going to look all that great.

I might watch 5 games tops this year if this is the roster.
IT starting would at least provide some entertainment.

I was watching him last season and felt like he lost a step or two - maybe he was injured? I also though his D was underwhelming.

A veteran PG on a cheap 2 yr deal when Wall is out for at least one year anyway...I'm ok with this deal. I rather this than moves like the massive overpay for Mahinmi.
Seems like the front office is being shrewd with the limited $ that is available and acquiring draft picks in the process. The future is bright.

Shrug, not sure what you expected.
The Wizards are capped, Wall is out for the year, what readily apparent moves did you have in mind that would propel the Wizards from likely lottery candidate to winning somewhere around 40 games?
There's enough here to keep me interested in what's likely going to turn out to be a race to the bottom.
Rui Hachimura, baby Admiral, how is Bryant going to look with a full offseason under his belt and the benefit of being able to return to the same organization.
Is Beal going to take another step, what about Troy Brown Jr. and are we going to see Wall after the All-Star break?
How will he look in limited minutes, how is Brooks doing, and what about the never ending GM search?
I'm reasonably excited, and my expectations are low.

Agreed. With Sato's departure, the Wizards were left with no PG conceivably capable of starting. Ish Smith was about the best guy left on the market. You can't go into the season with Justin Robinson as your starter.
I wish the 2nd year was non guaranteed or only partially guaranteed, but it looks like Smith had the leverage at this point.

Agree with all of this. What I like the most was that there was obviously a coherent plan. Sheppard refused to spend big money on any long contracts for vets and he focused on accumulating picks and young players. The plan is obviously to not worry about being competitive in the 2019-20 season and instead focus on acquiring and developing youth. With Wall gone, it's like a free pass to tank and rebuild for one season.
It looks like they'll have the luxtax room to absorb one more bad contract into a TPE and land one more pick/prospect

I’d have matched Sato and try to trade him later, perhaps next summer or before 2021 free agent bonanza

Nothing to be ecstatic about, but not horrible. A short-term deal for a position of need.

Chicago gave them some picks to convince them not to.

I expect Troy Brown to get a lot of run at PG. This also bodes well for Robinson's chances of getting minutes with the big team...in addition to probably playing with the Go-Gos.
