2019 Non-Wizards' Summer League Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by AWIZZINGBULLET » Tue Jul 2, 2019 11:28 pm

Summer League officially kicked off last night, no thread, it looks like.

This is just to get the discussion going until the Wizards tip-off on Saturday night.

Anyone on your Draft-day radar/UDFA's list, this year or previous years, turning heads so far?

Last year I was intrigued by Jevon Carter's game...PG West Virginia.

This year, I was certain the Wizards should've picked up Shamorie Ponds as an UDFA and I have this gut feeling that Nassir Little will be a lot better than the twenty-four teams who passed on him, probably thought he would be.

Player thoughts?

Spurs drafted Murray 29th in 2016. Drafted Derrick White 29th in 2017. Drafted Keldon Johnson 29th in 2019 (via Raptors in Kawhi trade).

R.C. Buford might have found another one. It's only one game in SL of course. But I like the skill.

I thought drafting Quinndary Weatherspoon in the 2nd would be one of those moves, that made the Spurs look smarter than everyone somewhere down the road.

Zions too big. He needs a nutritionist and a legit trainer to get him where he needs to be. Dude needs to be down 30-40 lb and replace that with 10 pounds of muscle.

Haha, in the lead-up to the draft I wondered if Zion was at-risk for going Hot-plate as he grows into that body, he has the body-type that can quickly go beefy fast.

I think every team should have a chef and nutritionist and constantly have healthy and delicious snacks in their players lounge. And even comfortable rooms to crash and relax. You’ve got multimillionaire teenagers and young guys who have no idea how to shop and cook and what to eat. You want to give them a reason to hang out near the practice facilities instead of driving out to fast food or staying at home and binging on whatever.

If the atmosphere is a players dorm or frat or clubhouse with a house mother/chef/concierge making sure they’re taken care of, then they have more reason to hang out with each other in the weight room. Film room. Practice court. With trainers. Etc. Why not give them a reason to choose to hang out and work hard.

And with an on staff concierge or activities director you can set up fun and smart things to do, concert tickets, back stage passes, meet and greets with stars who are coming to the Cap One center, or outings with stars from other sports. Even team trips and vacations in the offseason, flights together to islands or whatnot. Family cookouts. Resources for players families to get jobs or start businesses or get help going to school etc. Financial consultants. Reasons for even old heads and veterans to hang around the facilities. And for their families to stay invested in the team and want to stay. Keep it all top notch high class and in house.

But even if your concierge is arranging a limo to a club you at least know where your guys are at all times and ensure they have a safe ride home.

Dunno. Seems like teams need to invest better in their employees. Players are used to their team being their entire lives and then suddenly they have millions of dollars and no direction or infrastructure or advice on what to do on a daily basis.

Hell, go the next step and actually provide a living quarters for the players. A nice little decked out apartment suite where the young guys could live, or at least crash there after a work out.

Exactly. How I meant the frat or dorm —or I guess with an activities director/concierge — like a resort or cruise ship or high end hotel. But sure, with rooms for guys to stay. Sections that are “players only” for guys who want and need to get space away from family and demands on their time.

But activities in another common area that draw families together and promote positive action. Teach. Cooking classes by that top end chef. I don’t care what. Driving lessons. College courses.

Even a gaming lounge so they can hang on couches and play together. Or premiere a new release movie.

Consult with high end health resorts. How do you make living right as much fun or more than redlining your bank account and adrenal glands with late nights and risky activity.

Not judging. Drugs and fast women and random sex are fun. But at some point you have done all that and look around and realize there’s got to be more than this. If so the team should be one of the safe places to return to. People who actually have your best interests in mind because they know it’s all a community.

Even for alumni of the team. Players who have moved on. They know they can come back and get a good meal and good advice. That the team did well by their help. So they will get back some if what they gave.

I dunno.

The announcers in that Pelicans Knicks game were saying that Zion had been on the road for about a month or so with some of it being meet and greet type stuff. He did look heavy and a bit stiff walking around in warmups, but he probably hasn't been in an optimal conditioning environment.

Should be fine by the start of the season, but he's unlikely to be overly svelte after he retires.

Trail Blazers' Devin Robinson: Logs double-double in loss

Robinson recorded 14 points (3-5 FG, 8-9 FT), 10 rebounds, two blocks, and one assist in 20 minutes during Saturday's 93-73 loss to the Pistons. Robinson compiled a double-double, attacking the rim and earning a bunch of free throws while hauling down boards galore. Portland has a need for two-way players along the wing, and while it's unclear whether Robinson is a capable enough shooter, he's at least a player who could earn a training camp invite if all goes well.

Cool. Just as long as the decision to stay or live there or not is left up to the players.

In MMA a lot of camps will have nutrition and weight cut services , but there are also large companies that do nutrition and weight cutting for fighters and a lot of camps source out to them or a lot of guys that are on their own or in smaller camp will do that or do it on Thier own. They need specific fine tuned plans for them. They are all unique athletic specimens . Not one is the same, Joe Rogan had a good pod cast with one of the top MMA nutrition guys and he talked about biological and nutritional readings and really fine tuning a plan for a specific guy because what works for him isn't going to work for another guy who might burn or hold on to it process certain things a different way. Every guy should have their own plan and special attention paid to their body based on their specific body needs and requirements

That's ridiculous. Fall is going to be an absolute liability on defense. Putting him in the pick-and-roll will be a joke.

Bol is going to get destroyed because of his lack of girth. Good bigs will just seal him off down low for a deep entry pass and power through him.
