I’m in the minority, but I thought he had potential.

I’m hoping they sign Matthews to a real contract.

Then cut Robinson and sign O’Quinn

I hope they acquire Justin Patton. I think he's worth a look.

Yeah, let's take a good look at Justin Patton.

If he was 22, he might have had potential. But he is 25. WYSIWYG. He is a 12th man at best. Better to use that spot to develop someone with higher potential.

There is no need to sign Mathews to a real contract. He is getting paid like a vet minimum guy on a normal contract as long as he is with the team and in uniform. And we have his RFA rights even while he remains a two-way player.

O'Quinn is almost 31. It may well be the case that he is the best available free agent journeyman out there, but there is zero potential that we get a "diamond in the rough" if we sign him. I'd rather use the roster spot on a guy like Yoeli Childs, or someone lighting up the G-League. At least there would be a small chance of finding a guy who will help us in the future.

Agree with nate on this -- I've always really like O'Quinn; was hoping we'd pick him up in the 2012 draft, but Ernie threw away the pick we had that would have made it possible (don't recall the details unfortunately). But, he doesn't fit our purposes as a rebuilding team.

Hoping for Yoeli Childs or Justin Patton. Or promote Mathews & make Childs a 2way player (doesn't make a real difference but seems more like the right thing to do....).

Yeah, but O'Q doesn't fit any teams purposes. He's always been liked a lot by the "stats community", but there's a reason NBA teams don't care for him - he's ridiculously slow for an NBA athlete, and he doesn't make up for that by having a 3 point shot. No NBA team wants him.

For sure! All the same, he's played 8 seasons, & he's produced. He has a terrific BBIQ & outstanding skills in a lot of areas. Plus, he has a lot of $$ in the bank! Or, at least I hope he does.

A definite success story -- imagine if James Wiseman could get as much out of his natural gifts as O'Quinn has managed to get from his!

I’ve kind of lost hope that any regime under Ted will ever actually build something that could compete for a chip.

So, I’d at least like to watch a few players I enjoy rooting for. High Bball IQ, tough as nails, tries on D.

I totally agree with you and Nate about the relative wisdom of a move like this. But I’m tired of watching our “centers” play “defense,” and I’m tired of nobody holding perimeter players accountable for weak close outs, failure to fight past screens, lack of desire to keep players in front of them.
