The Wizards sign Jordan Bell to a 10-day contract

I like it.

TBH, Bell would have made more sense than Gil as an offseason signing. He is the rebounding/defensive PF archetype that should fit well alongside Bryant and Wagner. He had his best on/off differentials when playing in Minnesota alongside Towns. Too bad Bryant is out for the year.

He really should add a rudimentary catch-and-shoot corner-3 to his game like Bonga has. He desperately needs a means of staying out of the way on offense.

We have added beef up front. I like it too. Len and Bell and Lopez are a junk heap of front court players, but our rebounding should improve and we have a lot of size to pack against the Embiid type players in the East. It's ugly and we need more shooting elsewhere at any point when Beal and Bertans are off the floor, but still, I like adding muscle and size up front so if we are going to lose we still won't be demoralized with interior penetration. I still wish we had a Bigs tutor who could shape whomever we fill the position with instead of leaving it as an afterthought. We need better screens, passing, and a low post move or two from every player we put here.

Development matters. It drives me crazy watching the same organizations draft unheralded guys and develop them into quality NBA players. Teams like Toronto, Miami and San Antonio constantly produce good players, watch them depart in free agency, but just find someone else to replace them.

Kawhi leaves? No problem, Kyle Anderson has been developing nicely to replace him. Drafted him 30th.
Kyle leaves? No problem. Here comes Keldon Johnson, drafted 29th.

Why can't we ever do this?

2017-2018 Bell was great. Wonder why he’s bad now

Still confused as to why we are still going with the stopgap veteran signings instead of giving playing time to young players with upside.

Ted, unfortunately, wants to make the playoffs and prove people wrong. Team also need bodies for practice and bench due to these COVID-related absences.

I think Bell has had some maturity issues and also being undersized big without a jumper doesn't help. I doubt he sticks around but if he does well I'd waive Gill and sign Bell to a 1+1 deal.

With Len and Bell we now have a playoff team roster.

I agree that a mentor big is someone who the Wizards would benefit from on this team if they had one.

San Antonio is wise. The Wizards are DEFINITELY DOING BETTER than in the Ernie Grunfeld era. Bell and Len together are really nice additions. They aren’t diminishing players age wise.

The article mentioned that Bell as a rookie was mentored be Andre Igoudala and Draymond Green. He is joining with fellow Oregon Duck alum Troy Brown Jr.

He’s only on a 10-day deal but I love the fit chemistry wise. He’s a shot blocker and is a very athletic C/PF.

Such a great question! -- I've moved my response to a new "why can't we ever do this" thread....

I liked Bell a lot in the '17 draft --as did CCJ, if I recall correctly. He was a terrific defensive big in college. & he was very very good as a rookie with GS.

His biggest problem, it seems to me, is that as he tried to extend his game, do more things, he was pretty much unsuccessful at everything he added.

This is another signing I don't really understand -- unless, I suppose, Bell has shown some new skills in the G League (he was assigned by us to the Iowa Hawkeyes). But, it's a 10-day contract. Maybe they're trying to buy old man Lopez some nights off? Tho... every night's been a night off for the whole team lately!

Dunno.... I think we are just trying to put players on the court at this point in time. Bell is a end of the bench player.

You remember well, pif. :)

I hope he can become as successful as Bo Outlaw was years back.

I reminded of JaVale McGee and his mom asking Ernie for a Big Man coach during his rookie year, Ernie told him he would have to pay for it himself, nothing has changed.

I was a big Bell fan, but... he was found wanting by GS because he flat out stunk on offense - even if his stats don't look terrible. Teams would not guard him in the playoffs, and he failed to make them pay when he got the ball. But he was raw with GS - maybe he's improved since then. I approve of the move. Excellent defensive tools.
