Hey y'all. Wanted to create a unique thread on something I've noticed this season even more-so than others & that's the fact that the box scores are not 100% accurate. What I mean is in tonight's game Len was given a "turnover" statistically when it was Mathews who was called for the offensive foul on the play. In Len's 1st game with the Wizards, he was the beneficiary of errors too - Given 2 rebounds when he wasn't in either play. You can see the exact plays on NBA.com's box score feature too, so it can be looked up. Noticed it before this season too.

I agree it probably balances out for each player over the course of the season - but why would it even need to balance out? Why can't the NBA after games just re-check the box scores & adjust the statistics accordingly? I understand they can't do this in terms of adding/subtracting team stats, but for individual players this would be very easy to do considering all the stats are in video form already so it's very easy to spot.

Just something that is confusing to me in 2021, that we still have errors in box score statistics, despite all the technology out there. I don't think something like this happens in other sports - Where something is called "on the field/court" but then the statistics show something else. That's not human error; that's technological error which is silly & unnecessary.

They do, I see league stat corrections occasionally in fantasy basketball - both nearly real-time and next-day.

They may sometimes, but as I said, just from looking at 1 player the last couple games (Len) - I can still see errors. I'm sure if I look at this for every player I'll see way more erros. It still says he had 5 rebounds his 1st game as a Wizard when he actually had 3. Here's the exact plays for proof:

That's just the time-stamping of the statkeeper throwing off the automatically-generated video. I dug up a replay of the game (here: https://nbafullhd.com/13806-2/) and the rebound he was credited with at 4:41 in Q1 was correct, just entered a few seconds late - it should've been around 4:47. The automatically-generated "every possession" video skips straight to 4:41, which makes it look like Len was given a rebound for Lonnie Walker's offensive foul on Beal (which was recorded by tracking as a separate event, at 4:37). Ditto the weird clip right after - Len's rebound was recorded at 0:38 in Q1, but actually happened at 0:44, in the play before what the 0:38-indexed highlight shows.

Still something for the NBA to improve, no doubt.

Ah good catch, I should have double checked. I double-checked the Len turnover from last night & that was still incorrect actually (45.6 sec mark he was credited with a turnover when it was clearly on Garrison & called as such) ... I may be wrong, but what's crazy is this box score error actually did affect them since Len was called for his 3rd personal foul here & he eventually fouled out as we all know. Unless it was rescinded later - which it doesn't appear to be, though I just skimmed the box score quickly - Len only had 5 fouls for the game when he fouled out.

It seems crazy the coaching staff or Len didn't catch this last night if I'm evaluating this right.
