The Raul Neto Appreciation Thread

Unless it's sitting comfortably on Page 50, I'm wondering how no appreciation thread for Neto's been made.

Balanced and scrappy, Neto's a dog!

Arguably the best Wizards' backup PG in the past 10 seasons!!!

Thank you.
In a year where all of our PG's have been injured and or seriously regressed (Russ, Ish, and Brown), Neto has been a hardworking, pesky PG that gives this team energy.
Vet min signing giving us a per 36 of 15 / 4 / 3 / 2 with a TS of 56% and a greater than 3:1 AST:TOV ratio.
His +4.8 On/Off is certainly welcome and his plus defense with heady offense make him one of the top backups in the league. Caruso, Graham, Payton Pritchard, Tyus Jones, etc... All high level backup guards, and Neto has been as good or better than all of them.

Kudos Tommy.

Pesky as right. He's been so good lately at sneaking around and poking the ball away. 5 steals yesterday was amazing. And in the Lakers game, when he did that to Lebron and stole it leading to a transition bucket - I thought that was the key play of the game.

Great thread.

As I said in the Denver game, Neto does everything right except be tall. He's a reliable outside shooter; he can play on ball or off ball; he never turns the ball over; his shot profile is perfect: at the rim or behind the arc; and he's legitimately a good defender other than being incapable of switching onto big forwards and centers. I really like having a guy on the roster who Brooks can use to harass the quicker guards in the league.

Had to go back several pages to find this thread, but now that he’s bee resigned I wanted to show Neto some love for how well he played for the Zards last season.

I also wanted to point out that with the addition of Holiday we know have two pesky, high IQ backup PGs with a good bit of dog in them. Love that.

Our new starting PG is also known for having a good bit of dog in him.

Woof! Woof! Woof!

Indeed. Great addition at the vet minimum.

You're the second person who's alluded to Holiday being a pretty good defender, that's good to hear because as much I wanted to believe it, his college scouting breakdown wouldn't allow me to.

I see references on Twitter that Neto signed for the minimum, but I can't find confirmation anywhere.

Whether he is being paid $2.0 or $2.3M is irrelevant for our purposes. What matters is that vet minimum signings only count against the cap the equivalent of a 2-year vet salary, or $1.6M. The league actually pays the rest of his salary. His cap hit and luxtax hit will be $1.6M.

Our total salary, for 14 players, is 135.9M. The luxtax is $136.6M

That leaves just a little bit of breathing room to afford 10-day contracts and such.
I suppose if we could stick Isaiah Todd onto a 2-way contract instead of a league contract, that would free up another $900K and give us just barely enough to sign Mathews to a vet-minimum deal. But we might still be just a few dollars over.

I figure at some point by the trade deadline, we'll deal either Bryant or Harrell - since both are expiring center contracts - in a trade where we'll take back less salary, but that's to be determined. That's where it's good to have a GM like Tommy - who has good relations with other GM's. If they do him a favor, they know he'll do a favor for them down the road.

Yeah, that's an option, but maybe it's one that they're unwilling to risk for fear of not finding a trade partner.

In a perfect world, we would sign Mathews now and exceed the tax; and by the Trade Deadline, we'd move Bertans and/or Harrell for modest cap savings to get us below the tax, plus future picks.

Agreed and tbh, if I were Tommy, I wouldn't take the risk of signing Mathews, and I think he'll get a bit more than the minimum.

Looks like we have to go into the tax in order to reach 15 one way or another. Hence I find the way we handled Mathews completely inexplicable. He certainly played well enough that he has some value. Rescinding his offer threw that value away.

Above all, it makes no sense if we planned to bring Mathews back for the vet minimum -- his offer was at that exact amount & gave us many more options with him.

This seems inept to me. Unexpectedly so.

We don't have to reach 15. It's perfectly fine to play with 14. Or 13. Or even 12.

13 on the roster. Minimum of 12 active, plus 1 inactive.

Aahh. I thought the CBA required us to carry a 15-man roster.

Actually, from Article xxix, Section 5 of the CBA, which for some reason I can't grab via edit>copy, we are required to carry 15, not including 2-way players....

I was remembering from back when there was only a 12-man roster.

Now there's a 13-man roster so you need at least 13. Actually, the way I read Larry Coon, it looks like you now need 14. 13 active and 1 inactive guy who is a real NBA player, not a 2-way player.

Probably the last year he's getting the minimum. I would think his next contract is probably for half the MLE. I think he fits like a glove on this Wiz team, and it's not like this season is a fluke, he did it last year as well.
