I'm just trying to figure out when did KP turn into a scrub? His contract is awful, but the media were ready to ride Paul off into the sunset because he was older and his contract was terrible. Now there's a report out there that at 36, he might get a 3 year/$100 million deal.

KP is 25 years old, he's 2 years older than Thomas Bryant. Let me just say again, the contract is terrible, but if all you're giving up is essentially Thomas Bryant for Kristaps Porzingis, you wouldn't do it? Would you want to be the GM who pays Thomas Bryant $16 million a year when Gafford is making what...$5 million over the next two?

Say what?

I think Bryant is going to get paid on his next contract. It may not be $16 million a year, but he's going to get at least $10 million, if not more.

I'm not so sure. So far, I haven't heard any buzz from national pundits like Zach Lowe or Bill Simmons or General Board fans about Bryant. They all think of him as a dime-a-dozen offensive center who you can't win with because he doesn't play defense. That may or may not be true, but that's the perception of him.

I think he is perceived as being in the Alex Len/Marvin Bagley tier of guys, not in the Vucevic/Sabonis tier (guys who you can run an offense through). I think those guys are falling out of favor these days and are not worth more than MLE money, if that.

If Porzingis' value has dropped to the point where we could pick him up for non-core rotation players and maybe a pick[1], count me in as interested.

Sure, in an ideal world, we'd wait for a legit 2-way superstar under contract to pout their way off their team and into our welcoming arms. But I'm not sure there's anyone who's currently (allegedly) available who is more talented and a better basketball fit w/ Beal and Russ than Porzingis.

It's also possible that Dallas eschews the "second superstar" model, and instead tries to go full ATL by surrounding Luka with as many crafty shooters as they can find. Bryant qualifies, and Bertans is at least a shooter. If I'm Dallas, I choose Gill over Hutch, and select another shooter with our 1st in the 2021 draft. Shep then goes back to lurking, and stepping in as the third team in trades to scoop up more dross to refashion into servicable bench players.

There are other offseason strategies that are headier and steadier. But I'm not sure I see another path that has more upside.

[1] yeah, that's a big if. If Dallas is willing to move KP, other desparate treadmill teams will be interested as well. Portland, maybe?

KP isn't a scrub. But neither is Bertans/Bryant. It's a marginal upgrade if any and KP's salary is ridiculous. Especially for a big that doesn't rebound.

I'm cool with an all in move but this isn't it. Probably weakens the roster if anything.

Mom can we buy an overpaid, injury prone Latvian?

As long as we're cribbing from Reddit, here's a thread w/ link to The Ringer's Kevin O'Connor's analysis of KP's marketability.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/nugrya/oconnor_league_sources_have_told_me_interest_in/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

To summarize: sources claim that interest around the league is "minimal," and noted that Dallas can't move a first round pick until 2025.

Was about to post about Porzingis. It's a no brainer tbh. He'd be a perfect fit at center for us. Throw out how he did with Dallas. Dallas is Doncic's team.

Yikes, might have to pass on Porzingis. He's a disaster.

Yeah, I didn't realize he had lost so much lateral mobility. If he can't recover that, he's an extremely expensive pick and pop specialist who's a liability on defense.

DO NOT WANT PORZINGIS!

Contract is so bad. He can't play defense. We saw him not take advantage of LAC small defenders on the block.

Plus his brother who is his agent is also toxic. You don't want to bring that shid here.

I think Ted and Tommy would stay away form him just due to the accusations alone. They seem to be pretty no no nonsense guys when it comes to character .

Personally, I rather trade for Christian Woods than Porzingis. Cheaper and better able to play the 4 (as well as the 5).

Having said this, I posted in the trade board a potential Porzingis trade from the Wiz side and it seems his value is real low and some posters thought he could be obtained by us just offering Bryant + Bertans (and Hutchison for salary purposes).

I wonder if Porzingis bad lateral movement and awful defense against the Clippers was a product of his lack of effort based on his dissatisfaction with Carlisle’s Luka centric offense where Porzingis was relegated to a spot up shooter.

It would definitely be a gamble trading for Porzingis as we would be potentially be locked in for 3 years if things go south…and I agree there are clear red flags in relation to character issues. But the talent is there and it could pay off if his mobility returns and he becomes again a decent rim protector.

Versatile wing defenders are the most coveted players in basketball today. You need a bunch of them to survive in the playoffs. We have just one, Hachimura, and he's not even that good. We cannot afford to spend all of our cap room on two guards and a no-D center like Porzingis. There would be no money left to acquire and retain respectable wings.

The only way I'd contemplate acquiring Porzingis is if we unloaded Westbrook in the transaction.

Versatile defenders that can shoot aRe the second most sought after players other than stars. Imo, Porzingis is just to big of a gamble. Look at his injury history. At 10 million a year I could see it. At 30 million a year no way.

If you throw out his Dallas years, all you have are his Knicks years - when he played - where he was an inefficient scorer, non-rebounder, and soft defender.

Yeah.. Porzingis is trash, expensive, and plays a position of little need for us.
While Im not a proponent of any trade, I could only see two types of trades, all for wings:

Middling swing: Barnes or Grant for Bertans, Hutch, 15/Rui
Big Swing: Jaylen Brown or Anunoby for Bertans, Rui, 15, plus future 1st (We would need to remove protections from Houston pick)

I'd be open to the big swing, especially because it probably secures Beal coming back... but I dont have any interest in the middling swing. I think Rui will quickly close the gap between himself and the Barnes/Grant tier of wings, so I dont see a huge talent upgrade. Also, we cant add that type of salary and expect not to cost us in terms of overall talent/depth.

He's always been a scrub. He's been the league 6 years, & he's never yet had a good season. Last couple of years he's improved his rebounding, but that's it. KP is not a good player. Period.

If you want to dispute that, Rafael122, please point to something he does well.

Rafael122 wrote:His contract is awful, but the media were ready to ride Paul off into the sunset because he was older and his contract was terrible. Now there's a report out there that at 36, he might get a 3 year/$100 million deal.

??? Chris Paul is one of the best players in the history of the game. He is absolutely THE best PG. His production hasn't fallen off. Of course he'll get a last big offer.

What has this got to do with a scrub like Porzingis?

Rafael122 wrote:KP is 25 years old, he's 2 years older than Thomas Bryant. Wow...
Look -- 25 years old means he is in his peak years. Lousy before. Lousy now. He's not likely to improve appreciably.

Bryant isn't likely to get $16m, but to tell the truth he's closer to being worth that money than Porzingis to being worth what he's making!

Rafael122 wrote:I think Bryant is going to get paid on his next contract. It may not be $16 million a year, but he's going to get at least $10 million, if not more.

Absolutely. I guess GMs around the league will be seeing him differently from how you see him, huh? My guess is he'll get $12-15m. Assuming he stays injury-free & plays at his pre-injury level, he will be good value at that number (in this crazy world of NBA salaries, that is).

What kind of a deal could be made around Josh Richardson and his $11m expiring contract? He got next to no run in the playoffs and I have always viewed him as a great glue guy. What would the Wiz have to add to a Bertans to get off his contract and get Richardson back? Other than KP, Dwight Powell is the only negative value contract. Trade checker says: Richardson/Powell for Bertans/Ish works? Thoughts?

Bertans for an expiring would be terrific. Doesn't seem likely, alas.

Porzingis averaged 23&10 on 58.2% TS. His defense is terrible now though. Looks like he had a -3.4 on/off, which was in the bottom half of the team.

Before this year, Porzingis was a dominant defender, I would love to acquire that player.

Hard Pass. Russ is a better player, a better teammate, and a better fit with having Bryant and Gafford.

I wonder if something like Wiggins for Porzingis isnt the best solution at this point
