One word: DEPTH
Holiday > Ish
KCP > Mathews
Kuzma > Bonga/Hutchinson
Harrell > Wagner/Len/Lopez

Will wait and see how Dinwiddie turns out vs. Russ.

Practices should be pretty intense with Harrell, Gafford & Bryant going at each other.

You mean, as opposed to the intensity of AP and Moritz Wagner? Jason Smith? Ian Mahinmi?

Harrell is nothing but a C nowadays. I'm not sure why there's even a discussion of this.

He'll shoot over them easier. If Kuzma's game is going to get better, it's probably going to have to be from shooting 3's better, and he's got a height advantage over... smaller players - making it easier to shoot over them.

Skill/quickness advantage >>>>>> Height advantage.

Kuz likes to slash, asking him to create off the bounce against quicker players on the perimeter seems counterintuitive.

There's almost been no discussion of Kuzma as a wing until he gets traded here so I'm not following along with it all tbh.

Fact is we've arguably got 6 PFs on the roster. The current roster is unlikely to be the finished product. I assume there is some sort of follow up move to reduce the glut before the season begins.

You're make an issue out of something that doesn't exist, tbh. I'm pretty sure Lakers opponents put their bigger forwards almost always on Lebron and Davis - not Kuz. And he took slightly more 3's than 2's. He's not an interior player, and he's not in any way - a pure PF and never has been in the NBA. He certainly doesn't play at all like a classic PF, and most teams now have very little distinction between PF and SF. The fact is - none of the Wiz forwards are true PF's. Rui's the only one that's close.

Wait a minute. So Dinwiddie is getting 18M/year, with 2.5M of that as Unlikely bonus and the last year only guaranteed for 10M?
Ummm, thats a great contract for us.
Serious question. What makes Dinwiddie any worse than say, Brogdon, Murray, or Fox?

He's making 60% of what Fox & Murray make over the next 3 years.

That doesn’t add up to $62M.
Is something else in the deal that isn’t accounted for in those numbers?

If those numbers dont include the Bonus (7.5M), then 62M would be accurate... But I think the contract is actually 54M, which is a steal.

Give it to tommy for writing such a team friendly deal. I mean of dinwidie is healthy and plays up to his potential, then we do have a good value. And of he doesn't well. We aren't put much.

Yeah, we should have factored that when the reports came out. Players agents always want to make the headline number look as big as possible, but it's really not a 3 year $62M contract. It's 2 years at $35M with a 3rd year at $19M, but with a $10M buyout.

I wonder what the bonus terms are. Are they based on individual exploits (ASG, 20/8, etc.), or are they team related (make ECF's, win 50, etc.)

This also explains how there was room under the luxtax to sign Gill. As long as Dinwiddie doesn't make those bonuses, we won't exceed the tax.

It's probably a mix like if he makes a playoff or all NBA team and the wizards make the conference finals or something like that.

Spotrac has just updated the salary numbers and there's an interesting thing that can be gleaned from the numbers.

We currently have a roster size of 14, and $2.592M in cap room (using the revised Dinwiddie salary numbers without the bonuses).

Isaiah Todd, if signed, will cost $925K. That still leaves $1.67M in cap room, which, incidentally, is the exact same size as the minimum salary vet slot.

It looks like we are reserving the option to add another player. I just don't know how they're going to do it. You can only have 15 (unless they've increased it due to Covid. I can't find anything on that.) Perhaps the plan is to put Todd on a Two-way contract? His agent wouldn't be happy about that.

Garrison Matthews?

Fingers crossed. Though it is odd that we relinquished his qualifying offer and let him become unrestricted.

Ultimately, it would probably be a bad move for Mathews to sign here. The roster is already chock full of one-dimensional catch and shoot types (Bertans, Kispert and KCP). Mathews will be real low on the depth chart.

Do you mean that the fact that we haven't already signed Todd (who would bring us to 15) indicates that we are weighing our options? IOW, if a guy is available who would be more immediate help we sign him -- & then put Todd on a 2-way?

If we hadn't relinquished the offer to Mathews, he would have tested the market & then, if nothing better came along, picked up our offer.

That would have taken us to 15 -- meaning we'd have had no choice but to put Todd on a 2-way deal. No surprise that Tommy wanted to retain control of this.

OTOH, it's perfectly possible that we already have a deal worked out with Mathews, but we don't want to execute on it until we know a few more things. Thus, we may be moving one or more of the 3 guys acquired from LA.

One of the things making me think along these lines is that no one has made an offer for Mathews. At the least, you would expect to see him on someone's Summer League roster! There may be a deal worked out, & Mathews' agent is keeping other teams in a backup queue. If the Wizards deal doesn't come through b/c of roster pressure, then they turn to the other offers.

Some risk in this for Mathews, obviously, so it couldn't be open-ended. But, at least it provides some scenario for understanding what is obviously an odd situation.

Yes.

Or if they permit 16 players this year because of Covid, we can sign Todd AND a minimum salary vet.
