Vernon Carey, Jr.... who are you?

Post#1 » by payitforward » Thu Mar 17, 2022 9:26 pm

Poor Vernon Carey, Jr. hasn't even managed to draw his own thread -- so unfair!

He was an outstanding one-&-done player at Duke, scoring almost 29 points per 40 minutes on a .615 TS% while grabbing over 14 rebounds.

Here he is as an NBA rookie scoring well in extended minutes vs. the Nets:

Ben Wallace. Washington had him and didn’t play him sufficient minutes before including Big Ben in a deal for Ike Austin.

Christian Wood put up numbers for at least a couple years before his breakout.

Carey might be along the lines of Julius Randle but he is in a losing numbers game at PF or C . Like Jalen Smith was for Phoenix.
Bye bye Beal.

Carey was an awful defender at Duke - part of the reason Duke's defense was so bad. I expect that's the main reason he's gotten so little play.. in the NBA.

Vern was in COVID protocols, now he has a right calf strain? Has anyone heard WUJ/Tommy made any comments about him...ever?

Remember when mama McGee asked Ernie for a big man coach and he told them he could pay for it himself? Classic Wizards phuckery.

Vernon Carey needs a time machine to make it in this league.

Yup.

And he can’t shoot.

He’s a dinosaur.

He’s played 133 total minutes.

I mean, he almost put up 26&13 per36 as an 18 year old freshman at Duke.

Id like to see him play before I draw any conclusions

I have a feeling we don't keep Bryant, and I have a feeling we go into next year prioritizing guards to add some our 3-4-5 spots are pretty solid.
So I think he might get a chance next year. Maybe.

Bumping this thread --

If you look back at the 2020 draft thread, you will find that I mentioned Vernon Carey, Jr. many times -- hoping for him to be there at #37 (the Bulls R2 pick which we had that year).

Carey was an absolute monster in his one year at Duke. Guys with his size & skills don't come along often. He put up almost 29 points & over 14 rebounds per 40 minutes. He got to the line over 11 times per 40 minutes.

All the questions about his NBA potential were (still are) on defense.

But, it's not true that "...he can't shoot." He didn't shoot the 3 very often at Duke, but his % was .381.

I look at him as Thomas Bryant light with slightly better foot work and more steady knees. And a much lower price tag.

Meh, now show his defensive highlights.

Its sorta like the deal was with Thomas Bryant. Teams will overlook productive offensively efficient bigs if they are not good defenders. How much TB get this offseason?

I think the issue is look at the foot work does he have the ability if he decides to put in the effort or does he not? TB did not have the foot work his feet were made of bricks.

Can't believe doc made the call to Tommy just to win his argument with PIF. That's petty.

Adios Vernon.

Tommy needs to listen better on draft picks, but otherwise he follows orders well.

Meh move and I’m a huge Wahoo fan. Now had we signed Diakite instead I’d be stoked. Huff will tantalize with an incredible game here and there but is passive as heck on offense.
