Also I was listening to the locked on wizards podcast and the host was talking about how Barton ranks in the top 10 defenders via some advanced defensive stats. Meanwhile I've been reading on here that hes an awful defender. Any stat nerds (nate) want to look at this?

Those numbers are probably cause of the 2x reigning NBA MVP
Nuggets fans were very frustrated with his defense last year

So you can probably take it somewhere in the middle and say he's a solid defender.nate33 wrote:AFM wrote:Been a fan of his since he came in the league. Mostly I just like watching him play. He's got that SWAG.

Individual wing defense is really hard to measure with statistics, so I take everything with a grain of salt. But it's notable that dRPM absolutely LOVES Barton's defense, ranking him 2nd overall behind only Tatum. And other highly ranked guys on the list (Bridges, Barnes, Wiggins, Herbert Jones, Anunoby, Okoru) pass the smell test.
On the other hand RAPTOR doesn't care much for his defense, ranking him 77th among SF's.
I'd say that most of these summary stats that rely on on/off data are going to have a difficult time getting an accurate read on Barton because Denver's on/off situation is so dominated by Jokic.

The issue is that Barton was bad last year, according to advanced stats he was one of the worst starters in the league and a borderline rotation player. His value was an expiring contract, but did anybody really believe that Kroenke would agree to take back a longer deal for an overpaid player?
