The Wizards have completely lost the ability to play defense. Over the past 15 games, they've posted a DRtg of 119.3, which would be dead last in the league. The only game they won in that stretch was the game against Minnesota. The defense was still awful, but the Wizards managed to hit 48% of their 3's so it didn't matter.
A better way to look at it is that they've lost the ability to play as a team, both offensively and defensively. WUJ has ceded all control to the team, where we have 3 "special" players that are guaranteed heavy minutes, a lot of shots, and don't have exert effort or display fundamentals on defense. You rip away any sort of incentive system when you completely cave to that, don't think other players aren't watching.
We may have never been a good team as currently constructed, but WUJ also couldn't get players to commit. One way to make players commit is limit said players minutes if they aren't committed to a core philosophy. The only players WUJ has had the spine to do that to is young players, even though they are the least of the problem.
It's a complete joke. These "special" players going on podcast talking about how they had no other options so took the money, or talking about opting out when they go back to play the team they miss, etc., yet we wonder why the culture is the way it is. You think any of the other players on the team would get in the trenches for Kuzma or Beal when they are talking like they have one foot out the door?
I know it's too much to ask, but if WUJ wanted to salvage any bit of credibility he'd say in a diplomatic way to shut up and focus on the team, or I'll look for leadership somewhere else. At some point as a coach you have to say am I going to be afraid of certain players my whole career or am I going to have a uniform way of how I run a team that applies to all players?
