Drew Gooden point tonight:

Green was selected #18 in the 2020 NBA draft.

Comparison/contrast these two players.

Josh green was pretty terrible in 2020. I can't call Johnny a busy until we decline one of his options and let him walk.

I can "see" the comparison - they look the same, physically. Honestly, I think part of the reason I struggle feeling optimistic about Davis is b/c I can't find a decent player comp. Maybe Green is a good comp, his stock is on the rise. How about Delon Wright as a comp? Wright did some stints in the D League before finding his groove today as a defensive disruptor.

I liked Josh Green in that draft, strong defensively, upside. He is bigger faster and stronger than Davis though. 6'10" wingspan. 39.5" vert.

If you like Davis it is for the idea that he is a grinder who will work harder than most to get better. You don't like that his confidence has taken a hit this year, but you hope in the offseason he adds something to his game.

A better comparable is from a throwback era. John Starks. But Starks also took the unconvential route to the league spending years overseas after being overlooked in the draft. Played with a fire JD has not flashed against NBA or even G-League comp. Also JD's confidence appears to be completely shot, being worse than replacement level in the G-League. Skill & confidence wise he looks years away right now.

It's all coming into focus now. Zingus as Ewing, John Starks clone in Johnny Davis, and Brad Beal as Allan Houston, right down to the ridiculous contract. It's a team Grundle would have been proud of.

Starks was in the CBA, not overseas as far as I recall without looking it up. Playing in like Schenectady or Syracuse or whatever. Taking those 10 hour bus rides to games. Back before Zeke Thomas killed that league off. I recall the various pieces on how he was bagging groceries at Safeway part time while playing in that league. But Starks had a burst and springs that Davis simply does not have.
