Probably the two most similar guards in the NBA. Both have one outstanding attribute, a great assist to turnover ratio. Similar scoring, similar assist rates, similar rebounding, similar edge with a slight edge to Tyus Jones who plays a bit more aggressively but then also plays more against reserves while Morris was a year long starter. Despite this Morris had a clear efficiency edge, all of these results are in line with their career numbers as well.
Tyus gives you better defense, again mainly because he is more aggressive, but he's not a strong defender. Memphis was willing to send 2 1sts to upgrade from him to Marcus Smart.
The difference between them seems slight to me; either is a solid rotation pro, neither is going to blow up.

Re: Tyus Jones v. Monte Morris
I'd rather trade Tyus and get the bigger return. Monte is competent enough but not as good as Tyus. I don't think Winger or Dawkins cares about 18 vs 19 wins, so trade the guy who will bring back more.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

Re: Tyus Jones v. Monte Morris
Monte Morris was the starter all year for a 35 win team.
Jones was a back up, but played on a team that was 2nd in the West.
Jones is one year younger.
Jones is a better defender.
Morris is WUJ's boy, can help young players learn the system.
The system won 35 games, with sometime allstars and NBA Champs on the roster.
This front office didn't hire this coach. Has made clear they are tearing down and starting fresh.
Jones' expiring contract is $14m vs Morris' $9.8.
The team needs a more $$ if they are going to reach 90% of the cap to collect on lux tax payouts.
The team traded for Jones.
Morris name has been discussed in trade talks.
Jones stays unless there's a Godfather offer from a team with assets.

It boils down to their personalities. Take the guy who is best able to lead youngsters through several years of frustrating losses while maintaining good morale and a strong work ethic.
I don't know either guy personally, so I'm unsure which one better fits that description.

Take whichever one they make the best offer from is how I'd go. My point is that keeping one over the other isn't a major difference; if the offers are clearly different, then go with the better offer.

Re: Tyus Jones v. Monte Morris
On their careers & this year, both these guys are quite good -- but Jones is better.
OTOH, Jones makes over 40% more $$.
The idea of a "choice" between them is artificial.
Neither guy is here b/c Winger/Dawkins "likes" him.
Monte is here, b/c he came with the joint.
Jones is here, b/c he made it possible to trade KP for draft assets.
Neither guy is here as the solution to any problem -- either on the court or off the court.
On the court... we're starting from zero.
Off the court... if we really need an "old pro" to help our youngsters through the process, that can be a recently retired PG who's hired as an assistant coach. Or, I guess, it can be someone like Lowry. Miami will be paying most of what he'd cost.
Whether either or both will or won't be traded now or soon depends on one thing only -- what offers appear that bring back the best draft assets.

PIF, the fact that Jones is here as a result of the KP trade doesn’t mean he’s not here because Winger/Dawkins like him as a player. Both things could be true.
And no one wants a 37 year old, slow, oft-injured Kyle Lowry as this team’s oncourt leader.

Actually, the fact that Jones both makes more money and is also expiring at the end of the year is a positive. . If we can get to the 90% of Threshold, then the team can benefit from the lux tax payments. Thus he does serve the team off the court.
I believe the front office likes Jones. And also would be willing to trade any player based on draft pick offers. He’s not their primary choice as trade bait though. You hear the Wiz are offering Delon and Monte for future picks. You don’t read that they have put Jones on the market.

It can be true that they "like him as a player," to be sure. In fact, if they didn't like him as a player I'd be worried about them!

Why Zards! Prejudice against the elderly? I'm shocked, I tell you -- shocked!
Why... I remember when I was 37 (ok, barely!) -- I was deeply hurt when the kids at the local court never chose me for any of their pickup games....
Seriously... yeah, Lowry was a reach --

Still, the name of the game here is to amass draft capital.
