For about the 100th time, there is no such thing as "own part of the Wizards."

The Washington Wizards are a product owned & marketed by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Inc.

If Carmelo wanted to invest in Monumental, I am sure Ted would be at least mildly interested, though I think the ownership group is thought of as complete.

But, of course, investing in Monumental wouldn't give Carmelo what he seems to want -- the opportunity to run the Wizards. It would give him some shares in Monumental Sports & Entertainment.

Capisce?

Why? Has melo ever really been proven to be a true winner or a basketball savant? No he was a really good player for a long time other than that no thanks. The wiz are clearly in the up swing anyway

Is he the one who was saying the Wizards should give KD a farewell tour?

We should probably steer clear. I think we've finally got things on track with this front office.

Not a true winner is laughable... Was he a champion no, but this idea that he didn't win pretty much everywhere he was when he was the top option is kinda revisionist history...... But ok he wasn't a winning player....

Despite the success we are having now, he said OWN, not manage the team.... So I think once he did an assessment of the existing FO and there work, I think he'd stand pat on them... Where he'd be a massive improvement over Ted is by knowing how to relate to fans much better, and his ideas of the fan experience were actually interesting..... We are not on any kind of swing.... We drafted some promising young players, but we're still run by a dude who doesn't know what the hell he's doing......

I think the fact this team has been so bad, makes you think anything positive is getting there... Sometimes yes, sometimes no... We've never been composed in a way that would ever lead to anything other than early round flame outs, and constant disappointment.....Hopefully this new plan leads to different results than we've ever had since I've been alive..... But this pitiful franchise is the worst team that I root for, so most of my other teams in other sports are actually competently run and win titles..... I know how important ownership is, and honestly unless we're EXTREMELY LUCKY, we aren't winning an NBA title under Ted's stewardship......

All of this is pointless as I don't foresee Ted selling this team anytime soon, so we've gotta hope the OKC guys we've hired can change everything despite our owner not being very good.....

Carmelo seems like the kind of owner who’d gladly build a big three around Jordan Crawford and “your captain” andray blatche.

Interesting. Melo is Bubs mentor. I don’t hate that he’s interested. I do like the idea of trading for KD in the last couple years of his contract if PHX needs to dump him. Like Smart or Brogdon he’d be a good mentor. Though they don’t have picks to send him with so never mind.

Actually Melo is a champion, in NCAA play and under international rules. I doubt he’d be able to buy into the team at all, though it was Ted who convinced Abe to bring MJ in. But I don’t mind that he’s invested in our success and wants to see his home team turn it around.

We are FINALLY on the right track. We may never get competitive or we may, it will take some draft luck, but for the first time since we drafted Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld back to back in the friggin 60s, we are putting ourselves in a position to be truly competitive, not just a hopeful second round exit.

I don't want to change the management dynamic at all. Nor do I have much confidence in Carmelo as a potential owner given his history in Denver and the general history of former greats who try to go from player to running the show without learning the craft.

Bub did like Melo's post on IG ha. Anyway the main takeaway here I think is that we're no longer a complete laughingstock that no on wants to be associated with.

It wouldn't bother me but I have to point out that great former players often are
not that good in mgmt.

Melo had the misfortune of his career overlapping with LBJ who, like many others,
he could never beat.

I wonder why no one can grok this.

Ted Leonsis does NOT own "the Washington Wizards." For that reason, "he" cannot sell it.

The Wizards are owned by Monumental Sports & Entertainment Inc, of which Ted is the largest -- but by no means the only -- share-holder.

Without going into any detail at all, let me just say that w/o owning the DC NBA product, Monumental would make no sense whatever. Could not survive.

Now, Monumental looks to be quite successful. Growing rapidly. I can imagine Ted & the rest of the board deciding to take the company public.

In that case, Melo could buy as much stock as he wanted. Of course, that wouldn't give him any kind of management role.

In short, this subject is not worth discussing.

Nate can you close this thread? PIF said it's not worth discussing.

Only Deni Avdija is worth discussing.

Ownership groups routinely sell small shares to retired athletes, star athletes from other sports, and celebrities in general. The star gets to overstate their influence in the organization, sit courtside, etc. (Think Timberlake and the Grizzlies). The media gets to talk about the star as if they're a primary decision-maker (e.g., Jay-Z and Dwyane Wade "spearheaded" the on-court branding for the Nets and Jazz, respectively). The ownership group gets to leverage the star's wattage in the team's marketing efforts. And, I suppose, the ownership group could also include the star on FA recruiting visits.

I think Melo has decent star power, and he has enough of a regional connection to potentially add value to Monumental in this capacity. He could help deepen the team's connection with the Baltimore market, for example. But I could also see Ted & Co. deciding to allocate their resources elsewhere. Either way, it would be a marketing play, and it would be unlikely to impact the on-court product.

If Carmelo wants to invest into Monumental Sports, I think Ted would be interested.

After all, Ted is the big reason why Michael Jordan came to DC in 1999.

Different circumstances, given that the franchise also gave Michael control over the front office. Also: Michael's failed tenure would presumably be viewed as a cautionary tale, not a proof of concept.

This is wild revisionist history. I totally get that how good Melo was is up for debate. He was the best player on an NCAA Championship team and 4x Olympic Medal winner. He was a fantastic player that won a lot of games, including ones that mattered.

None of that is to say he would or would not be a good owner. I personally wouldn't mind seeing him involved in some of his fan experience concepts but in general I don't like to see ownership involved in basketball decisions, even if they are former players or coaches.

I would have less than zero interest in that. Players tend to be god awful owners and GM's, especially unbelievably talented former players. For every Jerry West, or Cruyff, there are limitless inept idiots.

Carmelo always struck me as lacking in self-awareness and metacognition, the worst of all possible worlds for a FO/Owner former player type.
