OK...I get that nobody but Scabs likes to talk hockey. But even the most casual fan has got to be impressed with the Caps' recent run from worst to first in the (albeit "weak sister") southeast division. If the season ended today, be in the playoffs for the first time since Paris Hilton was a virgin.

Nice job so far boys. But you need to keep it up. Let's put some distance between us and the rest of the SE.

With Victory, Capitals Rise Into First Place

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 6 -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals came to Wachovia Center on Wednesday with one purpose: to finish the job they started in this building 10 weeks ago.

With goals from Brooks Laich and Matt Bradley, and 31 saves from Olie Kolzig, they did just that, leaving with a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers -- and something far more significant.

The Capitals leapfrogged Carolina and Atlanta and moved into first place in the Southeast Division, completing a turnaround in which they have ascended from last place in the NHL in 34 games under Coach Bruce Boudreau.

Ovechkin and Viktor Kozlov also scored for Washington, which won for the fourth straight time in Philadelphia despite some tense moments in the final minutes. Mike Knuble, Sami Kapanen and Randy Jones tallied for the Atlantic Division-leading Flyers.

"The last time we were in this building we were in last place and now we're in first place," said Laich, who set a career high with his ninth goal of the season. "We're happy with where we are now, but we can't get complacent. We've got a lot of work ahead of us."

That was the predominant theme in the visitors' locker room, that the hard part is yet to come.

Incorrect! But hey, good stuff for those who can name more than zero players in the NHL.

I follow hockey, and the Caps are my second favorite team behind the Rangers. Ovechkin's a great player and makes the team fun to watch, and they have a good young core with him, Semin, and Backstrom. I wish them all the luck in the world, except when they're facing the Rangers. Will you guys take Jagr back and Straka for Ovechkin? Pleeeeease?

Certainly helps to be in a division where when you're in 1st place, you make the 3rd seed in the playoffs. But when you're in 2nd place, your out of the playoffs entirely.

Anyways ... great to see the Caps play well recently. Ovechkin is a beast!

Knock on wood.

Thus far, Ovy is one of the few Washington, DC exceptions to the rule that you give a guy a huge contract and...BAM...he's a bust.

Cough...cough...JAGR...cough...cough....JUWAN...cough...cough.

I'm NOT a hockey fan by any stretch, but from what I've heard, we have the Lebron of hockey on the capitals. Cool.

The turnaround began with firing their coach who was leading them nowhere :) Reading EJ?

C'mon now, Jagr has turned out just fine for us...until this year.

Go caps! I keep turning away from caps games to watch the zards, to my son's irritation. I'll have to start tuning in to the caps.

Sorry, I meant Jagr as a Cap.

He never lived up to his billing here.

The Caps made three trade deadline moves.

They acquired C Sergei Fedorov (probably in a "rent-a-Sergei" move for only this year's playoff push).

LW Matt Cooke was acquired in a trade for Matt Pettinger.

They also acquired G Cristobal Huet from Montreal for a 2009 second round pick. This move is more emotionally troubling for me. I wonder if it means that Olie is outta here at the end of the season.

Both Huet and Olie are UFA after the season. I assume that the Caps are only gonna pick one of them up.

It would be sad to see Olie leave the Caps...he should retire a Capital.
