Roger MF Mason. Appreciation Thread
Give it up to our most consistent player. Night in and night out, he comes to play everyday and earn his damn paycheck. AJ can't sniff Mason's jockstrap in terms of consistency. Too bad it's gonna be hell to keep on the squad next year.

I don't think we'll be able to keep him. He's gonna command major $$$. Nick Young better be taking notes. Oye...Nick Young

Yeah, I was feeling the thread title and then JWiz had to go and do that to AJ. He's probably just bitter that his game threads are yesterday's news. In fact, I think miller has better game threads than JWiz.
As for RMjr, he's the only baller in the league I've actually had a conversation with (to and fro Vegas for the ASG last year) and dude was completely down to earth and chill.

Another brilliant thread JWiz. Obviously, you have hit on the formula for success. miller31time is my boy, but your game threads are clearly superior.
Sorry to have to stab you in the back miller31time, but I gotta call 'em like I seem 'em.
Let's see who runs out of commendations first.
Snitch.

I just don't see how it's going to work salary wise. We can probably afford him next year but not the year after. Our problem is that we have practically no room under the luxtax in 2009/10. Mason is going to want a longer deal, 3-years at least.
And let's not forget about Nick Young. Mason is certainly a more consistent player right now, but will he be next year? And the year after?
I think the best-case scenario to keep him would be for him to agree to a 1-year deal, even if we slightly overpay. We can probably squeak him under the luxtax in 2008/09. When our luxtax crunch hits in 2009/10, we'll let Mason go. By then, we should have more trust in Young anyhow.
The trick is getting Mason to agree to a 1-year deal. I just don't see why he would do so. He's having, by far, the best season of his career. He may conclude that Summer 08 is his only opportunity to sign a long-term deal. If he signs a one-year deal with the Wizards, chances are good that he gets buried on the bench behind a healthy Arenas, an improving Young, and a never-hurt Stevenson. He could end up hurting his value for the Summer 09 free agency period.
I just don't see how we can afford to sign him to a long term deal unless we make arrangements to dump Etan.

he's got no chance at winning, but roger is definitely one of the most improved players in the league. lots of times that award goes to a player who simply gets more PT than the year before, not someone who actually improves. like, jose calderon might win this year but he's really playing as well as he did last year, just with a bigger role. but roger has just taken his game to a new level. did anyone on here feel comfortable with him on the court last year? the only thing he brought to the table was the occasional ability to hit a wide open 3 if he caught the ball and had a second to square and shoot.
now if we need a big shot there's nobody i'd rather have taking it. he has gotten really, really good at that gilbert-type play where he dribbles to his left or right and stops and pops off a screen to nail a 3. he's better at curling off a screen, catching and hitting the 3. he keeps defenses honest by taking it to the basket once in a while.
he's become almost the perfect backup guard in today's NBA. he's passable at the point for a few minutes at a time, even though he's far from a great playmaker. he can get hot very quickly and doesn't complain if the minutes aren't there. an absolutely key contributor to the team's success this year. kudos to roger.
that said, he's going to get his $$$, and he deserves it. and with NY waiting in the wings and DS locked up, it's hard to see where roger fits in once/if/whenever/etc gilbert is back. i'll be content giving him a warm round of applause in his first game back at VC as a visitor.
