Today, it was announced that Kevin Garnett is the Defensive Player of the Year.

That, also, isn't surprising, but take a look at the voting breakdown...

the man led the league in steals by a large margin. not only is he making Kidd look stupid now, but back in March he had nine steals against him (to go with 31-5-11 and only one turnover, but that's irrelevant to this convo)... and must of those are converted to the alley-oops to Tyson Chandler you see so often on ESPN (does anybody throw more alley-oops than Paul???)

True. He gets a lot of steals. Along with that, someone should show the voters tapes of Paul guarding Deron Williams and see if they still give him a vote

Steals are great, and Paul is the best in the biz, but they are only one part of defense. Paul is an average to slightly above-average man defender. Then, you have defenders such as Duncan who gets 2+ blocks and nearly a steal per game, AND dominates in terms of man and help defense. Now, who would you rank higher? I mean, I just find it ridiculous how underappreciated he is.

Then there's Camby who gets 3+ blocks and around a steal per game, but is, to be blunt, an average (some even say below average) man defender.

yeah, last year in the playoffs i was playing devil's advocate and trying to convince my boy that i'd rather have deron williams than chris paul. this year has convinced me otherwise, but deron really is right on his heels. and yeah, he sure does get up for those matchups with paul.

I agree wholeheartedly on Duncan vs. Camby, and you have to look at how much they are helping the team defense. Seeing that Camby is on a team that couldn't stop an 8th grade AAU team from scoring and the Spurs have won games by large margins while shooting well under 40% themselves (not to mention what they did to the Suns last night), Duncan should def get more votes. But then again, in what way is Duncan not underrated? I feel your pain Miller31Time

I don't think he received any votes, but he should have ranked around top 10 or 15.

Yeah, I'd definitely rank him ahead of a bunch of guys on that list. He's better than Rip, Billups, Kirilenko, Rondo, Bell, and Howard

Haywood could have easily been on that list below Wallace.
