With the Wiz fighting the luxury tax, the Wizards are going to have to sign guys to minimum deals and hope a couple of them blossom. Two guys off the top of my head who I think we should target are Dahntay Jones and Tarence Kinsey.

Jones is a guy with little offensive game (decent perimeter shooter) but could become a major defensive stopper down the line because he is very quick laterally and has very good fundamentals. He couldn't make the Celtics this season and he got after a short run with the Kings (maybe because the Kings have a glut of wings in Martin, Artest, Garcia, and Salmons).

Kinsey is a guy I really wanted to get last offseason. He was released by Memphis some during this season and went over to Europe. He showed in the latter parts of the 06-07 season that he had some legit offensive and defensive talent. I remember he looked very good against Kobe in a head-to-head matchup. He is very long and athletic but like Nick he is not much of a passer and rebounder.

doc, ba, what about Marcus Haislip? Going to Europe has really helped his game out. He has developed his jumper and his back-to-basket game since heading overseas. As CCJ stated in an earlier thread, we need athletes on this team and this guy could be a great addition to the frontcourt.

I loved Kinsey last year just as much as Lowry. If he's healthy he's a good player.

I don't like Dahntay Jones but I'd love the Wizards to sign Bobby Jones.

I suspect the Spurs will pursue Bobby Jones and our own Roger Mason Jr. Both players are good specialist. Jones is a lockdown defender with high character who can hit an NBA three.

Roger would be terrific in the role of Brent Barry with the Spurs. Knock down a three and don't make any mistakes. Also a high-character guy.
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

If he opts out, what do you guys think about going after Jermaine O'Neal?

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Jermaine is definitely not opting out of 20 million dollars. However, he is my top trade target. It's time to move Blatche and some more for him. With Chicago and Miami getting Rose and Beasley and the Hawks, Bobcats, and Magic rising, our window of opportunity is closing right before our eyes.

I'd resign Roger as long as he is getting paid LLE type of money or 2.5 mil a season at the most. If he is getting paid more than that, then I would probably go:

1) Tarence Kinsey
2) Bobby Jones
3) Dahntay Jones

I'd take Kinsey first, because he is by far the best offensive player of the three and still provides above-average defense.

After comparing the Jones's, I'd take Bobby because the 3 ball seems to be a bigger part of his game and he is the better rebounder of the two. Bobby, I am sure, will eventually end up sticking with a team because he works his ass off.

Whoever is the target I am sure that they'd come to us with a guaranteed deal for the minimum for 2 seasons with the first season guaranteed. We have Roger Mason as a success story to point to about the opportunities that arise being a Wizard.

I think we could use Haislip. As someone pointed out earlier, EG drafted him and busted on him. However, the guy has really put some work in on his offensive game and we could use his athleticism on the boards. Another long athletic big for LLE money wouldn't hurt. We'd just need to get rid of either or both Etan and/or Songaila.

And he got a front row seat seeing him stink for several years.

Of the others mentioned - Kinsey, Dahntay Jones, and Bobby Jones, the only one I might be interested in is Bobby Jones. Kinsey is a stick figure, and Dahntay is nothing more than a poor man's Stevenson. Jones at least has some size - to differentiate himself from Stevenson. He played for several different teams last season. At least that shows teams are intrigued by him - though not enough to make the move to keep him.

So what if Kinsey is skinny? That did not stop Larry Hughes from becoming a decent pro. I understand it is going to hurt him when guards post up on him, but he can still close out on perimeter shooters.

We are not looking for the next Manu through FA. We are just looking for a reserve who can play spot minutes.

Here's a link to the list of 2008 free agents and a few of the UFA's that caught my eye:

http://www.realgm.com/src_freeagents/2008/

Chris Duhon
Devean George
Matt Barnes
Quinton Ross
Casey Jacobsen
Michael Doleac
Kevin Ollie
Brian Skinner
Roger Mason

Most of those guys are end of the bench types but a few could play roles as replacements for our regular reserves if GMEG makes any trades.

I wouldn't mind having Duhon if he could be had on the cheap.

I think this list shows that the grass is not always greener on the other side. I'd take Mason over any of them. At the same time, I would take Bobby Jones on a minimum deal over any of the above guys except, perhaps, Barnes.

I'll tell you the one PG I'd love to have....Telfair. He really improved in Minny. He's quick as a jet, an excellent ball handler, a great passer, and really underrated. Put him on a run & gun team, and he'll get you 14 and 10 a night. He's much better than TJ Ford.

No he isn't. He still sucks. He can't shoot (40%/28%/74%) or do anything else besides pass the ball, which he is just above-average at.

With Butler, Nick, and Emeka in fold, you are not going to lose enough games to get a top 3 pick. If you let Gil and AJ go, you let them go and do not sign anyone until you feel this team can make a run.
