Flip Saunders 2/23 --pis 1-- Day of the Viable Candidate

"[Feb 23ers] specialize in offering not only ideas but also themselves as viable alternatives to less than ideal circumstances. They are often problem solvers engaged in moving things forward in a positive direction..."

Realists, down to earth individualists, skilled at sizing up a situation and putting their finger on exactly what can be improved. The thrill of dealing with everyday practicalities: build on yesterday, plan for tomorrow. 'Kairotic sense' knowing when to act, when to stand pat. Usually have a plan B. Excel at helping those who have reached a dead end. Pragmatic, analytic, convincing.

At worst: beware that realism doesn't become pessimism, then depression or self-destructive patterns. Occasionally hyper-critical, all-knowing, or negative. Have to keep balance in their lives.

Gil. (1/6) Cap -- Substantiation--. The self as the evident manifiestation of the wonders of the universe. Highly courageous, not averse to facing danger. Recognize the power of dark forces, but radiate an innocence that wins over skeptics. Risk: they may need to be worshipped or adored; may prove to be too demanding for others who take life more casually. By retaining childlike sense of wonder/awe are often many steps ahead of their negative critics.

Caron. (3/13) Pisc. --Fateful Prediction-- Capable of weathering what woudl be overwhelming catastrophes. Pride, grit of the survivor. Best success when some early struggle/crisis galvanizes them to lifelong mission. Personal evolution and growth is built into their make-up. Wish to be an inspiration to others, to find those who benefit from their personal experience and pass it on. Have a knack for the self-fulfilling prophesy. Courageous. (Cliff Robinson, Bobby Jackson).

Tawn. (6/12) Gem. --Bouyant optimism--. Never give up, ever, it will all turn out alright. Willing to lead by example more than advise, will let you sink yourself if you aren't doing right. That's on you buddy.

Haywood: (11/27) Sagi. --electrifying excitement--. (Nick Van Exel, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Lee). Capable of exerting tremendous energy towards a goal, excellent additions to a work team. Instinctive read of what their co-workers need --technically, emotionally. Make excellent bosses, though non-authoritarian, tend to rebel. Absolute freedom of action is their primary requirement. Anger is a serious problem for them, violence a theme in their lives.

DMac (10/20) lib/scorp cusp. --Vogue-- Do things their own way, own distinct style, often rejecting established methods, but desire is to be recognized by their peers, not just to be accepted, but influential. Hard headed, hard to stop them from following through. Extremely competent managers. (Eddie Jones lakers/miami outside gunner/defender).

Nick Young (6/1). Gem --Popular eye-- Marylin Monroe. Concerned with public appearance, publicly open but secretly a private person. masters of imitation/learn technical skills by watching & mimicking. (Smush Parker).

Andray Blatche. (8/22) Leo/Vir. --Seasoned Experience-- (Bill Parcells, Norman Schwartzkopf, Terry Catlege, Michael Curry). Patient, hone skills privately slowly over time, not wanting to rush. Suddenly out of nowhere put it together all at once. Very loyal. Refuse to be bullied.

DSteve. (4/3) Ar2 --Fulcrum-- Desire to be indispensible. Controlling their environemnt is high priority. Intolerable to be ignored. Outspoken, can get them into hot water, but strong physical presence is reassuring to allies. Longterm neglect of health can cause problems. Involvement in group activity takes up most of their energy. (The (original) Secret Weapon CJ Charles Jones --also-- Never Nervis Pervis Ellison).

DSong. (2/14) Aq. --Cool Quip--. (Rip Hamilton) Cool under fire, things slow down for them when things are hectic, they know what to do, see it. Quietly sarcastic and funny.

JaVale McGee (1/19) Cap-Aq cusp --The Day of Dreams and Visions-- Electric, Creative, Influential; maladjusted, unstable, self-destructive. Tend to go overboard expending extreme energy risking burnout, need to learn to cultivate discipline. (Michael Adams, Luc Longley)

JCritt. (12/31) Cap1--Aesthetic Promotion-- Work to promote beauty. Sense of the needs of their society and how to satisfy them. Pragmatists. (Brent Barry, Bryon Russell, Shandon Anderson).

Etan (4/1) Ar. --Day of dignity-- Straightforward, self-disciplined, thoughtful, hard working. Shoulder responsibilities that others might see as a burden. Workaholics but tend to want to learn for themselves do it their own way, no matter how much energy is required. (Norm Van Lier, Kevin Duckworth, Mark Jackson, the Lopez Bros)

Opec. (12/8) Sagi --Abandon-- Throw themselves completely into whatever they do, give all their heart without holding back. Supercharged with energy but don't always direct it well. (Dwight Howard).

Mike James (6/23) Gem/Can --Interpersonal Enchantment-- (LaSalle Thompson)

Hmmn, playing the metaphysical algebra game. Looks like we're contenders, but not sure victors.

Strongest conceptual line-up is:

PG --Substantiation
SG -- Fulcrum
SF-- Fateful Prediction
PF-- Boundless Optimism
C-- Electrifying Excitement

with PF/C-- Seasoned Experience and C(PF?)--Dreams & Visions contributing. (Perhaps even PF/C--Abandon, though it may get the whole crew sidetracked).

Now you'd much rather rely on (#1 draft pick PF-) Realistic Inspiration than to stay too long with (a perhaps misguided) Optimism... Turn to your reserves of Optimism when things look worrisome, but otherwise stick to the more pragmatic realistic approach.

(Or failing that, somehow trade down further and pick up SG--Supportive Partner, and PF--Established Presence both. Seems to me a Supportive Partner would work fine in place of a Fulcrum, and an Established Presence next to any of the frontcourt concepts adds a certain credibility).

In the back court starting with 'Vogue' may mean the team constantly surfs the cresting wave of success. Though actually perhaps (combo-) Fulfillment, (combo-) Utopia, or even PG-Limit Pusher would better help carry the team over the top towards a championship.

Could they win? Well so long as they're always led by a Viable Candidate, they're never out of the conversation.

I submit to you that Ricky Rubio is in-fact the reincarnation of Pistol Pete Maravich. Maravich died in 1988, Rubio was born in 1990.

Randy Foye (9/24 Vir-Lib. cardinal air) Day of the Wanderer. Imaginative, giving, free-spirited; perhaps unsettled, restless. Driven to travel, literally and metaphorically: mentally. Never completely settle down, each time moving on thinking this one is permanent. Little interest in the mundane, active minds, unusual tastes, can seem overly intense. Can be surprisingly skilled in technical areas even while they may seem odd, occasionally space cases. Bring a sense of enjoyment to bear on almost any situation. Faithful friends.
(F Scott Fitzgerald, Jim Henson of sesame street and the muppets. Basketball: Drew Gooden)

--Dunno, in draft research etc this didn't seem to jibe but I don't know him personally. He reads to me like he was born one day earlier:

(9/23) Day of the Breakthrough (John Coltrane, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles -- Ricky Davis, Brandon Jennings). Creative, adventuresome, action oriented. Not free to develop until they overcome difficulties. Life as a series of ongoing challenges to be met and conquered, spiritual warriors. Use the fruits of their struggle to benefit those around them (see the Randy Foye foundation in Newark helping kids from rough neighborhoods with scholarships etc). Capable of moving mountains but also sinking into depressions. Impossible to fake enthusiasm when they don't feel inspired. Not particularly verbal, communicating directly, precise, economical with words.

Given that his parents disappeared when he was a toddler it's not like he can ask about it though. Could be somewhere between the two.

Mike Miller (2/19 AQ-Pis cusp, fixed air) Day of the Explorer.
Tough and determined. Daring, imaginative, forceful, if occasionally uncontrolled or rash. Must fearlessly explore and follow their curiosity to adventure. Capable of handling stresses of ordinary life. Love travel, adventure. Practical enough to keep their feet on the ground. Drive toward success is healthy and vital. Make good team players due to perceptiveness and awareness of those working with them, particularly in sizing up strengths and weaknesses, recognizing potential. Respected as steady reliable, stable; often with leadership ability though they rarely desire to be in charge. When they have the impulse to move they must be free to follow their instincts. Occasionally prove to be their own worst enemy due to reckless drive, impulsive, spontaneous. Penchant for physical activity that only needs to be channeled to ensure vigor continued good health.

Oberto (3/21 Pis Aries cusp, cardinal air) Day of Clarity.
Courageous, self-expressive, direct. Forthright more than ultra-sensitive. Often misunderstood because they live their life purely on their own terms. A touch of the dreamer but with a practical side that outweighs overall. A genius of setting up structures, even if they never turn out quite as they expect. Their confidence is a quiet assurance, they may seem passive but the truth is they simply don't find it necessary to justify themselves. If you don't like it, too bad. Physical aesthetic side, can be graceful, . Born leaders possible to express themselves with few words. Courageous, stick to their guns even if it demands a fight. Though they can give the impression of being uninvolved or detached their anger when aroused is terrible. Child-like and child-oriented aspect.

The metaphysical algebra game. Right now we're starting:

Gil -- substantiation
Foye -- wanderer/breakthrough
Miller -- explorer
Oberto -- clarity
Haywood -- electrifying excitement

Then substituting -- 'seasoned experience' (Dray) either for clarity or excitement. And using a 'fulcrum' to help gain leverage for either a breakthrough or substantiation. Sounds to me like it's all leading to interesting discoveries.

With Caron back ('fateful prediction' displaces 'wanderer') it becomes a more directed quest. Sustained later by the addition of 'bouyant optimism' (Jamison) right when hope is more important than 'clarity' or 'experience'. Faith can move mountains at times.

Metaphysically perhaps you'd prefer to bring optimism in off the bench otherwise your optimism might lead you off on a wild chase beyond your abilities and preparation. Then again, the triad of 'fateful prediction', 'optimism' and 'substantiation' seems pretty strongly supportive of a positive outcome. Something like destiny. Though it seems to me it would be even stronger when 'dreams and visions' (McGee) join the destiny three. Optimistic dreams and visions substantiated are all that we are asking for in our hope and faith.

When led by a 'viable candidate' to be sure the outcome is uncertain, but at least you're in the mix. Why not? If the signs suggest a positive outcome as the endpoint, then all else is simply the journey along the way. It's Destiny, Wiz fans, foreordained...

We just keep getting hit," Arenas said. "I don't know what the hell is going on around here. I don't know if some old player put a curse on us back in the day. I have no idea."

"The Curse" deserves it's own thread, but having one would just perpetuate ..."The Curse"

That's what it says. I was skeptical as well, he shares the birthday with Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee, but very few members even of this board would think of Big Wood nee' 'Brenda' as a kickass rock star.

On the other hand one aspect of the sign was that those born on the day tend to be surrounded with or provoke anger. Our pal WizKev said that this was perhaps more accurate than I thought at the time (Lo the many years ago when first i posted the metas as a lark) -- he said that interviews with him in the past were often filled with simmering grudges. Then in subsequent years he had a few brawls with Etan, Eddie Curry, LeBron, etc -- and lent some credibility to the idea, if you believe this sort of thing.

He has proven a lightning rod to attract negative commentary or spark conflict for know-nothing fans and supporters alike; or occasional coaches even... Tough to argue with that, right?

For two days, several Knicks players had trouble sleeping because they were convinced that their hotel in Oklahoma City was haunted.

"I definitely believe it," Jared Jeffries said. "The place is haunted. It's scary."

Eddy Curry said he slept for only two hours Sunday night because he couldn't stop thinking about ghosts.

Guests staying at the Skirvin Hilton have reported ghost sightings and strange noises for decades. According to the New York Daily News, legend has it that sometime in the 1930s, a woman jumped to her death while holding her baby in her hands.

"They said it happened on the 10th floor and I'm the only one staying on the 10th floor," Curry said. "That's why I spent most of my time in (Nate Robinson's) room. I definitely believe there are ghosts in that hotel."

The Thunder defeated the Knicks 106-88 on Monday night.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson doesn't believe there is such thing as a "Clippers Curse," but he does have an opinion about the team's struggles.

"I come from a generation that believed in karma," Jackson said before Friday's Lakers-Clippers game at Staples Center. "I do think there is karma in effect ultimately."

Jackson was firing at Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who agreed in November to pay $2.73 million to settle allegations that he refused to rent apartments to minorities.

"I can't claim anybody else's karma," Jackson said. "That's their own making, whatever it is.

"If you do a good mitzvah [a Jewish term for an act of kindness], maybe you can eliminate some of those things," Jackson continued. "You don't think Sterling's done enough mitzvahs to eliminate some of those?

Dray calling out Flip and standing up to KG reminded me of this line. Gilbert's acquittal in the face of dire criticisms also seems to resonate.

doclinkin, when you get a chance I'd be curious to see what the metaphysical analysis of the coach reveals.
2020 Wizards SHOULD Draft:

(Unless they move up in the top to draft Wiseman/Okongwu)

JALEN SMITH and either Xavier Tillman, Paul Reed, Udoka Azubuike, or TYLER BEY (if they get lucky and he slips in the draft).

Wow, doc. Having come to the Wizards I'm sure Flip the realist realized he's screwed some time back.

Having lost 14 in a row, and counting, dude's probably not easy going in the locker room.

His media comments are certainly borne of being depressed. He's routinely hypercritical in the media. I haven't heard Flip say he didn't know something or recall him deferring. His riding the players in the NBA is certainly self-destructive.

Helping players at a dead end? James Singleton--check. Earl Boykins--check. Merely trading for Mike Miller--check. Fabricio Oberto coming off crap stats, no game, and heart surgery--check.

Convincing? He's got a lot of folks so convinced he's a good coach they don't even question the man!

doc, that's spot-on. That is Flip Saunders all the way. I just think he's got too overwhelming a task and too many young, sensitive players for him to succeed here.
