Undrafted Free Agents

Post#1 » by jivelikenice » Sat Jun 28, 2008 5:13 am

Sorry if this is being discussed in another thread but does anyone know if we've signed any undrafted guys for our summer league squad? If not yet, we should set aside a thread where we can update that info.....

We just pick up Cash the other night, I hear his moral compass is out of wack. But he's willing to take one for the team.

Two guys I like as undrafted FAs. Russell Robinson from Kansas, who Ruz has already mentioned, and Stanley Burell from Xavier. Both are very good defenders, with Burell probably having a better offensive game and more potential on that side of the ball as well.

also Drew Neitzel although he is on Minny's VSL team........and if we need a hustling G with a good shot and all options are really out the window....Call me up....I'm 6 foot, range out to NBA three and I shoot it up well from GA range (aka the 25-40 ft range).....i can't dunk, but who can these days?.....i already have a max deal offer from the Min Twolves, but ill take the MLE from you guys cause it would be a dream to play in DC. So call me up.....talk to my agent......Gilbert Arenas...He didn't want to give money to an agent, but he will surely take mine.

Apparently Pat Calathes is one of the guys we picked up to play in the Summer League. He was a decent bet to get drafted in the 2nd round. Draft Express seems to like him.

It is rare that you find a player approaching the seven foot mark that is legitimately a small forward, but Calathes is one of those rarities. He is blessed with an offensive skill set of someone much smaller, looking completely content playing outside on the perimeter facing the basket against much quicker defenders.

Calathes showed off his ability to extend his shooting range to the NBA three point line, both in the drills and in the games themselves. Already a proven shooter from the collegiate arc (40% 3PT as a senior), he appears perfectly comfortable hitting the jumper from the NBA mid-range area.

Not only a shooter, Pat is a surprisingly effective slasher for a player his stature. He goes left and right equally well, using his high basketball IQ to compensate for his lack of verticality. Even more impressive is the senior's passing ability for a small forward, evidenced by his dishing out a team-high 5 assists in day two of the camp. His aforementioned basketball IQ and court vision come into play here, where he shows the ability to refrain from turning the ball over when a playmaker.

Defense is the area of Calathes' game that could stand for most improvement, as he at times lacks the lateral quickness to effectively stay in front of his man. His witty play allows him to compensate for his lack of athleticism only temporarily, before his lack of ability on that end is exposed. Likewise his lack of bounce hurts him on the offensive end, where he gets his shot blocked more than one would like out of a player his size.

WOO! Link?

I love the kid's game, smart passer who hits from outside and actually goes after a loose ball or two. He'll look good in Summer league. Leaving a couple roster posts open in the draft may end up paying off if GMEG can recruit some UFA's and hidden gems from elsewhere to compete for the roster spot. A PG on our team can make himself look real good I expect considering the quality of competition and big targets like McGee, Blatche, Pech plus a finisher like Nick Young or corner shooter like Pat Calthes.

 We totally scored, way-to-go Ernie. Obviously the Wiz staff have been reading DX. Very surprised he didn't get picked-up in the 2nd round.

Well I swore I saw this somewhere. I thought it was Ivan at first but I can't find anything on it now. So, I'll take it back. Hopefully we will sign him, he'd be a good guy to take a look at, but until I see otherwise please consider me mistaken on it. Sorry to get the hopes up.

Eh, that's okay I like Gary Forbes too, kid is a solid scorer, one of those guys who does a little of everything well if not any one thing better than anybody else. Like CDR. but in my book better considering he was his team's only weapon.

Anyone knows about the final roster for the summer league?

Happy to see G. Forbes in our roster for the summer league, as well as I would like to see Josh duncan too.

I actually liked AJ Guyton a lot when he was in college... I wonder if he can make it back after his time in Europe and be a third string scoring PG. Anyone been following him?

Also, is this the official summer league thread or is one being created?
