Sources told ESPN.com on Monday that the Wizards and Jamison would soon finalize terms on a four-year extension believed to be worth around $50 million, mere hours before Jamison was to become an unrestricted free agent

More than I would have liked, but not entirely bad. Let's just hope he doesn't grow old too soon.

I wonder what the structure of the deal is.

I have no problem with this. Years are reasonable and he was a 20, 10 guy last year, so this is about right.

LMAO that's way too much. With this and now Arenas getting 100 thou, the Wizards just spent a combined 150-160 million on a core that can't get them out of the first round.

I'm not a happy camper right now.

I agree, huge waste of 160 million so we can be a playoff door mat. They should have offered Jamison way less money. 4 years 38 million sounds a lot better.

He is on the wrong side of 30 as we all know but remember, he's never been
one to rely on the type of athletic skills the normally decline over the next
few years.

What is your alternative proposal?

Please be realistic.

That seems like a bit much. Damn Panathinaikos for driving up the price.

It just seems wrong that Caron is our least paid member of the "BIG" three.

Jamison's deal is not unreasonable. Its about what I expected.

Ahem, when the Arenas-Jamison core was healthy, they did make it out of the first round.

This is a good deal. I'd like to see the complete structure of the deal...want to know if its more $$ in the first couple years than in the last.

Keep in mind that GA has said that they will restructure their deal if it is preventing us from signing a player that can help the team get to the next level. I think AJ will do the same.

My first reaction was "Crap, Grunfeld overpays AGAIN!" but then I remembered that Philly would probably have offered a similar deal and Jamison would be an idiot if he didn't ask the Wiz to at least match it. About $10M too much, if not more, but still market value.

As for the structure. It has to start out low and have increases, otherwise they wouldn't be able to fit Gil's salary under the tax this year. That means we're going to be scrambling in 2009 to avoid the tax. We now HAVE to move one of AD/Etan/Songaila for an expiring deal or we'll be fielding another 12 or 13 man team in 2009.

According to a blog on the Washington Times website, the deal may be 4 years for 44 million. We shall see...

It's steeper than I would have liked, but Jamison had a realistic option of leaving and playing for Philly. EG has much less leverage with Jamison than he has with Arenas.

I'm guessing that with a contract that expensive, there was no way for EG to front load the deal. If it is indeed $50M, it was probably structured like this:

2008/09: $10.8M
2009/10: $11.9M
2010/11: $13.1M
2011/12: $14.2M

Paying Jamison $14.2M at age 36 is going to be a pretty tough pill to swallow.

That's a MUCH more reasonable number. A $44M contract would also give EG a little more wiggle room to front load it a bit, something like a flat $11M a year for 4 years would be good. Jamison at age 36 should not be getting paid in the neighborhood of $15M. He's already been overpaid for much of his career (though he was arguably worth it last year).

Ditto. What was unrealistic was those folks on the board suggesting that we could re-sign Jamison for somewhere around $8 million per year. The numbers he put up this year and the all-star appearance basicallly ensured he was going to get much more than that.

$12.5 million per is pretty fair IMO.
