I think Wes's worst move could have been trading for a gimpy Mark Price for the 1996 1st round pick. Only Wes was so much of an idiot to throw a first rounder away in the deepest draft in years. Say Wes never makes the trade, who do you think Wes takes?
12th pick, Players remaining:
1) Kobe (taken 13th)
2) Peja (14th)
3) Nash (15th)
4) Delk (16th)
5) JO (17th)
6) John Wallace (18th)
I think Wes goes Delk in that scenerio.

Kobe would have probably caused a stink if her were picked by Les Boulez. Given the make up of the '95 and '96 team, we probably would not have taken a big man. Given what we know about the players now, probably would have gone with Nash. But, we didnt have much of a scouting staff or a good GM...so I think Roy Rogers would have been our pick.

also you can say deepest but the top is pretty awful . . . out of first 12 picks, you have several selfish gunners (AI, Marbury, etc.), injury prone players (Camby, Kittles, etc.), and really only one player that really helps a typical championship team (Ray Allen). the 13-15 and 17 picks should have been all been top 6 in hindsight.

Wes' pick would have to have been in his fantasy league. John Nash was the GM who made the deal you reference.

Just because not all of those didn't win championships doesn't mean that those guys could conceivably help you towards your goal at winning a championship. Some of those don't even get to the finals without those players; (AI with the the 76ers, Camby with the Knicks). By the way, Antoine Walker got a championship ring; does that make him better than Iverson, Camby and Nash?

I think Wes was the worst GM in the history of pro sports in America, but I'm not sure this one was on him. I vaguely recall reading at the time that the deal was initiated by Abe face-to-face with the Cleveland owner at some owners' meeting. Anyone have a clearer recollection?

Hell no Kanye, even at his peak I'd have rather had a NBDL All-Star than that shotjacking ballhog. I'd almost say the same for Iverson (and have, repeatedly) though once they changed the rules to help him, he's turned into an above average guard. As for Camby, in his four years with the Knicks, he played an average of 49 games, that kills a team if he's a guy you count on. Fortunately, for the Knicks he was only a part time player anyone, even when healthy in their finals appearance he only played about 25 minutes a game splitting time with the likes of Kurt Thomas and Chris Dudley with Ewing out.
Nash is one of the guys I'd take ahead of any of the top 12, well before Iverson, Camby, Marbury, Ray Allen, etc.

Ha ha! This is a great question!
I also think it was Nash who made the deal, but Wes was the GM by the time the pick would have been made. This draft was the same offseason as the Juwan Howard fiasco (which cost us ANOTHER first round pick!!) and the Wes deal sending Sheed to Portland for Rod Strickland.
We lost alot of 1st round picks during this period when you consider the 3 we dealt for CWeb, 1 for Price, and losing 1 in the Howard re-signing.
Steve Nash would have been a great choice looking back, considering we needed a pg. We could have added Nash to our young core of CWeb, Howard, Sheed, Calbert.
Considering the Strickland deal however, Wes probably would have taken Delk IMO. He's a Wes kinda guy.

Wes would have probably taken Jerome Williams because he had a cool nickname (The Junkyard Dog) and was from a local school (Georgetown).

I think Wes would have picked Tony Delk . Kobe probably would have wanted to be traded or maybe threatened to retire if he had been drafted by the Bullets.
