Hey Washington fans.. Just came across this news piece that mentions Gilbert having a "clean up" procedure today and will be out until December.

Can anyone verify if its true or not??

Ivan Carter wrote:Arenas to miss camp, season's first month
Gilbert Arenas confirmed that he underwent a surgical procedure this morning that "cleaned out some debris" in his left knee. Arenas, who has undergone two surgeries to repair the left knee in the last two seasons, has been limited during the rehab process all summer and said he has planned all along on not participating in training camp or the preseason.

Arenas, who signed a six-year, $111 million contract this summer, said he plans on returning to game action sometime in early December which would mean that he'd miss at least the season's first month. The Wizards open the regular season Oct. 29 at home against New Jersey and play a total of 14 games in October and November.

"I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down," said Arenas, who seemed to be in good spirits. "It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster."

Arenas was limited to 13 regular season games last season and missed the final eight regular season games and the playoffs the previous season after tearing the left meniscus in the knee during a game against Charlotte on April 4, 2007.

I've been on vacation and just flew back into town late last night so I'm still in the process of fleshing this all out. I can't yet tell you whether or to what extent president Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan were prepared for all of this.

We do know that the team has two point guards on the current roster - Antonio Daniels and Dee Brown - and has precious little space underneath the luxury tax threshold. It would appear, as of right now, that the Wizards will go into the season with this group and wait for Arenas to get healthy.

More later.

Wonderful. We can be pretty sure that Arenas will not be at 100% at any time this season. So much for 48-50 wins. Now, we're looking at 40-44.

Ivan just reported it on Wizards Insider. It's true.

Nate's faster than I am on the reply, I see.

Obviously, this wasn't part of the original plan. I don't buy a "these things happen" argument; something went wrong here.

So, was this an issue where the initial surgery didn't go as well as initially thought? Or, did the knee worsen due to inappropriate rehab, etc? Or, did Gil pull a Monta Ellis and get injured off-the-books somehow?

Either way, I have absolutely *no* faith in the Wizards medical/training staff to get this right. None whatsoever.

Oh man I'm so sick of this **** -.- I'm not very optimistic he will be at his top anytime soon. 111M, and a great part of it right now seems wasted... Sign Livingston! :D

Wow.. I seriously hope its not a replay of what happened last year. He gave pretty much the same reasons last year before shutting it down completely. I love Agent 0 and the Wizards have invested far too much in this guy to see im sit out another season.

It's difficult to be optimistic about this. I think December is probably a best-case scenario, since that's usually what Gilbert talks about. Tough loss. With only chump change under the luxury tax, I'd guess we're going into the season with Antonio Daniels and Dee Brown at point guard.

Lol.

I'm sitting here on my computer trying to figure out why I'm actually pretty reserved right now.

And it's because in the back of my mind, this stuff is expected.

It's going to be really fun watching 1 month turn into 2 months which turns into "doubtful for return this season".

HA HA HA!!! Gilbert already has Abe's money and Ernie was too conservative with respect to getting a better back-up - especially considering Gils knee and AD's wrist. Man!! this is NOT the way we want to start the season.

Is Livingston holding out for more than the league minimum?

The awful corollary to "No News Is Good News" regarding Wizards' offseason: Any News Is Bad News. All the sudden I'm a lot less comfortable with the Roger Mason for Dee Brown exchange (I know it wasn't a trade, and their salaries are very different, but that's the effect on the roster, as things stand now). Add in Daniels being one year older, and I think we have to make a move. I would have prefered to see it happen before other teams knew how badly we needed it, but I think we need to acquire a solid backup point guard. Even if Gilbert comes back in December, we could use the extra help, but we need to be prepared for the possibility that he's out a lot longer . . .

Also note that when Gilbert comes back (if he comes back), he will be very rusty and probably not help us immediately.

This, very bluntly, sucks monkey balls.

Is it out of line to to think that Gilbert is never going to be the same again? I don't think so.

Exactly. This couldn't have been part of the original plan. If December is the best case scenario (or overly optimistic scenario as EG seems to always push), that means February is probably more realisitic, then we are talking about half the damn season. Not to mention how long it would take for Gil to get into game shape and mesh with the team.

I wanted Gil back, but I thought the surgeries were behind him? Did he pass a physical before they signed the contract??? The injury Gil suffered should not have resulted in THREE SURGERIES!!! His injury really wasn't that serious! It's very scary to hear this. This is a horrible start to the '08-'09 season. Our best player may be damaged goods b/c of his knuckleheadness & incompetence of the medical staff & surgeons. EJ has another built excuse for this year and we've got a roster that has no room for improvement other than guys getting healthy because we've committed all this money.

This wasn't supposed to happen. This is terrible news, just terrible. The Wiz & Gil can try to downplay it all they want, but another season looks like its going down the toilet due to injuries.

I'm officially depressed. :(

How many times does Abe need to see this movie before he brings in a proper training and medical staff?

This would be a little easier to take if Daniels wasn't already injured and our backup point guard wasn't Dee F'n Brown.

I swear, I wouldn't be half as disappointed if we had not had the horrible off-season that we did.

Unfortunately, over-paying for Gilbert & Antawn was all about Abe trying to win one more championship before dieing or selling the team.

Why does it take 2 months to come back from a scope? M. Kelly came back in 5 weeks from his scope. Most athletes come back from a scope in a month. I can understand scar tissue from 2 surgeries but 2 months for a scope makes you wonder. T

we should of never signed him for that much....Abe and EG are fools.
