A couple years ago, Kev introduced his idea to track each defensive possession with the goal of coming up with a real formula for rating individual players defensively. A few of us (SD20 and CCJ primarily) thought we could band together to chart games and give Kev the data he needed to develop a rating system. Then we'd sell it to NBA teams for millions.
Well, that never happened. But I did find this site that seems to be doing the same thing:
http://www.nbaplaycharting.com/blog/?p=3
Looks like they've got the software already in place to record the data and they just need people to watch the games and chart each possession using their interface. It's not gonna make you millions (pays $35 a game) but It sounds pretty cool. I signed up and I'm waiting to hear back.
Note - I have absolutely nothing to gain from posting this so please don't consider it spam. I just thought that I should post it since we'd talked about doing something similar on this board and and a number of folks were interested.

Yeah i saw it too on the ads by google box that we would normally ignore. I didn't read the "how it works" section thoroughly. Is it going to contain footage, or is it going to be by play-by-play with you just matching up who's on the floor to their opposing position? There were check boxes for "fighting through screen and allowed a score" and "didn't keep up with man and allowed a score" so i'm assuming footage, but i didn't know the NBA released "expressed written permission" like that or even "implied oral permission."
